Less than 2 years old Garmin Edge 530 Screen starting to unglue....

Hi there.. I noticed few days ago after a long ride in hot weather that screen on my Garmin Edge 530 started to show some kind of strange change on the upper border, and as first i thought is maybe some dirt or maybe trace of sweat.... So i just ignore it...

Yesterday another long ride, this time this discoloration  become a bit larger as area but still was optimistic that is maybe just cosmetic change of the border of the screen (it was just on border not visible area of screen)

And today short ride but some rain for like 15-20 minutes, and  realized that actually screen start to unglue for some reason.. Now this area is much larger than before and moving if i press with finger... Also seem that there is some water trapped in that area..

I have this Garmin based on invoice from 16.10.2020 so less than 2 years old and used just 20000km in this period.. If i compare this to my old Edge 520 which i had for 4 years and 50000km trouble free, im a bit dissappointed for quality of edge 530..

My Edge never been dropped or miss threated so wonder why this happened?

Anyone else having similar issue? I'll contact shop where i bought it in Monday, i guess this should be covered by warranty since is less than 2 years old? Should i expect brand new device or there is practice of fixing this one?

Any other advices regarding my issue?

TIA

  • mine did the same thing and continually has gotten worse. did you wind up finding a solution for yours?

  • Being still under warranty and never misused i got new one as a warranty replacement..

I have long history of using Garmin Devices and this is first time happening something like this..

And about this 530 i was really very careful while using it... Never ever dropped, scratched and used in rain just few short rides..

So i was really curious why this happened at all with this 530, and especially because  previous devices i had was used in more extreme conditions (much longer rides on really hot weather, and longer rides on rain)  and never had this problem with them (Edge 500 and 520)

So while waited for new device i checked few videos how 530 is build and realized they use some kind of glue for the screen.. When i analyze my rides before this problem happened i realized that i had 2-3 longer rides summer time (but again nothing extreme in term of hot weather or extreme temperature. I had much more rides on my edge 500 and 520  in much hotter weather) when the screen started to show some traces of this problem... One ride 150km in August, then another of 205km end of August and third ride in September 175km... After every of this ride screen showed some spreading of this, but i still hoped is just cosmetic and nothing serious.. Until i rode really shortly next day from last long ride of 175 km, and got caught in rain for 10-15 minutes.. Seem that rain found the way inside, screen started to have some movements since probably glue give up, and after a while device died :(

So my assumption: There was probably some production issue when they applied glue (too much, or less then ideal, or maybe low quality of glue or whatever...), then riding summer time probably slowly degraded that glue, and after a while first rain ride killed the device..

But more than obvious is production problem, and not because of usage or any misuse.. Now with the replacement device i got i wonder should i use protective case to prolong the life of it.. On 530 i did not used the silicon protective case, since i realized that friends who used on 520, had sweat trapped under the case and that destroyed their rubber buttons from the side..

So question to everyone reading this: Should i use Silicon Case on 530 or just use it as it ?

  • Should i use Silicon Case on 530 or just use it as it ?

I do not see how it could help with screen getting detached. The protective case is for mechanical protection against impacts, and by no means will it stop the glue from degradation, if that was the reason for the screen failure.

  • I dont worry about mechanical protection of my device, since i use safety rope attached to handlebar and really take care about my device..

I thought about protective case to avoid  if some sweat on climbs dried on the edges of the screen and if eventually that lead to premature glue damage somehow... But this is really less likely scenario especially that im wiping off and cleaning all sweat or dirt i found on my edge after the ride with soft cloth...

So probably u are right.. No need for a protective case, and just bad luck with my previous device...

  • Same issue except I hit a bump and the entire screen lifted off 2 weeks after water got under bezel after riding in heavy rain

  • Same with mine... started from one spot and got worse. Everything is still working, so hopefull the screen stays on, mine is well out of warranty now...

  • All, if your Edge screen appears to be separating or falling off, please contact your Product Support team to inquire about a replacement. Even if your Edge is outside the warranty period, it may still be eligible for an extended warranty. Would be best to have photos of the screen, as well as the serial number on hand when you do.
