Rerouting is really poor - I lost half my ride data

I missed a turn halfway through my ride but knew of an alternative route to get me back on track and was happy to put in an extra mile. For way too long, the Edge 530 bleeped, telling me to do a u-turn, then it just started a new ride and took me home. It acknowledged that I had somehow got from the starting point to the midway point but just mapped it as the crow flies.

See the attached comparison between Edge route and Strava, which I had running on my phone.

Question 1) Did I do something wrong?

Question 2) Is there a way to continue a ride but abandon the route. E.g. If I plan to do a 10km ride but decide to do an extra 5km, can I leave the 10Km at some point and go freestyle the additional 5km without Garment persistently trying to get me back on track? Better still, can I add a new ride but keep the existing ride in the system, so the total distance shows as 15km and not 1 x 10km ride and 1 x 5km ride?

Thanks.

  • You need to turn off recalculation when following a course to avoid unpredictable guidance.

Recording an activity and navigation are independent, so you can stop a course (press the enter button and select stop course) and keep recording. You can load another course if it’s already on the Edge.

  • Thanks. Any idea what happened to the first half of my ride?

  • The straight line would suggest that there was no GPS signal lock for that part.

  • That can’t be right as it did direct me accurately the entire way. I just missed the turn.
    Thanks

  • You can stop navigating / abandon route at any time of your ride. Press upper right button and then "Stop course" (or something like this, I have my Edge in different menu language than English). It will cancel road you navigate however ride data will be still recorded like usual.

  • That's weird. The straight line indicates that there is no recorded position data in the activity file for that section or it is corrupted.

    1. I think you turned-off recording.

    2. One way to stop the current course is to pick another course (even the same one). Before it loads the course, it will ask you if you want to stop the current course. You don't have to continue with the course you selected.

The units with touch screens makes this easier: there's a button on the screen that will stop the course.

Note that recording an activity and navigation are two separate things. You can do both or just record an activity (no navigation). There's no issue changing the navigation on-the-fly but you have to take care not to stop the activity.

    Try this at home.
