Need to purchase and install a Taiwan cycling map on my Edge 530

I have an Edge 530 purchases in the U.S. and now stay in Taiwan. I'd like to install a Taiwan cycling map but am not able to find it in Garmin's product site. Moreover, several articles found through Google say only models bought in Taiwan equipped with the traditional Chinese character map. Those models purchased outside of Taiwan will not be able to run the Taiwan map. Does anyone know a way to solve this issue for Edge models?

  • you can use sites such as https://garmin.bbbike.org/ to download and install maps on your Garmin

  • Thank you. I was able to create a map download file for Taiwan but was not able to enable it in my Edge 530 by following its instructions. Any insight or suggestion?

  • what instructions did you follow, and where did you get stuck?

  • Make sure you use a "Latin" version (the UTF-8 versions will not work).

Drop the map file (*.img) into \Garmin on your device.

The next time you turn the device on, you should see the map listed under:

settings -> Activity Profiles -> Road (for example) -> Navigation -> Map -> Map Information (select map).

  • Thank you so much for your suggestions. I tried the Latin version, and the map is showing now. You are awesome! Time to test it on the road. :)

  • Here is the instructions I took from the website.

Installing a custom Garmin image on your device is easy:

    1. connect your Garmin with a USB cable to your computer (or your SD card). You will see the Garmin device as a disk/storage in the explorer
    2. download the zip file and open it. There is a gmapsupp.img file inside
    3. copy the gmapsupp.img file to your Garmin device in the folder Garmin with the explorer (Windows) or finder (MacOS). You can do this also on the command line on Linux/FreeBSD.

As @dpawlyk later pointed out, my first download of the UTF-8 version did not work. After I tried the Latin version as suggested, the map shows up now on my Edge 530.

    Thank you for your comments!
