I rolled my firmware back, no more updates for me thanks.

Latest updates have broken the Edge, I suspect the next update will reduce the battery life greatly. Then after the dust settles they will release the 540.
This has been the Garmin way for 10 years.
I'm not going to do any more updates, mine works after rolling the firmware back to 9.1
That will do for me.
I will use mine until the Edge 550 has been out for a year and out of beta.

  • With t'he 9.10 t'he attitude works properly?

  • As far as I can tell my elevation again is correct after a ride. I have checked it against my wife's Wahoo and it's close.

  • Yes, the "upgrades" of the last 12+ months (versions 8 & 9) are pretty underwhelming and the unacknowledged problems they introduced are very real for many of us. There are a couple of things in 8 & 9 I would like but not enough to hold my nose and swallow the resulting issues too. I have gone further and am very happy on v7.10, no gross direction arrow/chevrons cluttering and obscuring my route and no drop-outs on my smart trainer..

  • Do you know if it is possible to turn off the update reminder that comes up every time I turn it on? I'm worried I will accidentally press the wrong selection and update it one day.

  • If you connect the device to a PC using USB (mass storage mode) you probably will find a file GUPDATE.GCD in the folder ..\Garmin. Just delete the GUPDATE.GCD from the device (you may consider to save a backup copy on the PC). If you use a MAC don't forget to empty the Recycle Bin (Windows terminology) after deleting the .GCD file to free up storage space.

Now you must learn the dicipline to delete the file GUPDATE.GCD from the device every time that the device was connected to Garmin Express or Garmin Connect (Mobile?) because the update file is renewed every time automatically. There is no setting on the device, Garmin Express or Garmin Express to disable the automatic updates.

So it's up to you to decide what's easier - ignore the update reminder, or delete the update file every time the device had connection to 'Garmin'.

  • Now you must learn the dicipline to delete the file GUPDATE.GCD from the device every time that the device was connected

BUT you can block the software updates with a dummy GUPDATE.GCD file.

Create an empty (or containing one space) dummy update file using a text editor (windows Notepad etc) name it GUPDATE.GCD, copy this to the device Garmin directory. You will know it is the dummy as it will be minimal (1KB) size rather than the correct 29MB

The dummy file prevents attempts to download a new update file and because the dummy is not the right format the update notification does not display and no update process starts. Has worked for me for years. Users report there are some conditions (eg some syncs via Wi-Fi) where the update file might still be downloaded and you will get the notification but I have not had this for many many updates (I am on 7.10). Of course Garmin can change the update process in the future so this may not continue to work but does currently.  If / when you actually want to update just delete the dummy file and the current update will download next time you connect

  • Cool, after reading bikepc01's reply I was already considering creating a dummy file to see what happened. Great to know that you have already done this without breaking anything.
I will give it a try thanks :)

EDIT: Yes the dummy file worked for me thanks :)

Garmin has been great at Hardware but Rubbish at software for at least a decade now, looks like that is not going to change, unfortunately.

  • Thanks for the tip! Have read about the trick before but always understood there were instances that the update file from Garmin was copied nevertheless. So never tried it. I'll do now. My device is Edge Explore and it probably will work too.

  • Update:
I have tested the trick on my old Edge Touring Plus and the conclusion is that it does NOT work. The dummy GUPDATE.GCD (containing one single 'space' character) is overwritten directly without any warning by Garmin Exress. Express does not even tell that a new firmware version is available. This explains my hesitations described above.

However, nowadays the Edge Touring Plus is an 'old' and unsupported device and not representative for the new(er) generation of Edges. I'll have to test with my Edge Explore, but software updates are very rare and experimenting requires entering back the settings every cycle, so for me I let it rest for now with my Explore.
