AVG speed inaccurate on edge 530

Hi

Is there a fix for the inaccurate AVG speed on a edge 530 please, I'm using the speed sensor and cadence sensor 2, I have manually calibrated them to make sure they are the correct wheel size, I've even put them on the front wheel and it's still out. I was using an Edge 520 plus with no issues at all and now my new 530 AVG speed is way out by about 4-5 mph, it doesn't climb above 11 on any ride even on routes I do all the time, so far the experience has not been good at all, I'm wishing I hadn't sold my 520 plus now.

  • That sounds weird.  Are you sure you don't have the Auto Pause set to a really high MPH level?  I'm sure you would know because the Pause/Start icons would be flashing all the time.

  • Hi

I've just checked the unit and I may have had the auto-pause set to off, I have now set it to when stopped, I'll give that a try, hopefully, that's all it was.

  • I think he means just turn auto pause off.  When I installed my speed sensor, it needed a period of time to calibrate.  I believe the instruction manual said try and do activities with longish flat straight sections to aid self-calibration.  I remember the Edge told me when calibration was achieved.

  • The OP says he manually calibrated, which is the most accurate way.  I generally roll out three revolutions next to a tape measurer then divide by three, which creates a very accurate circumference to enter.  But...

I think the OP is interested in Moving average speed, not the Overall average speed, which he is getting with auto pause turned off.

  • Have you checked to confirm the inaccuracy based on riding time and distance travelled and also check it with elapsed time  and distance travelled?  Speed = Distance/Time. I use a flight computer to check calculations like this all the time for planning my rides.

Auto Paused being turned off is probably the culprit causing the problem as then the speed calculation would be based on elapsed time instead of riding time.

  • Hi

Thanks for the info, I calculated the inaccuracy using the link above and it seems as though my current avg speed was based on me not stopping because the auto-pause was not turned on, I will try it out tomorrow and get back to you, fingers crossed.

  • Hi all, Thanks for you input, I'm pleased to say that all is well with my Garmin now that the Auto Pause has been changed from off to on.
