Stupidity of 530 turning on after disconnection from a power source.

Whoever decided that an Edge 530 should switch on after being disconnected from a power source or the power source turned off whist the 530 is connected to it should have been fired on the spot.

Never in my life have I came across anything so grossly stupid as a 530 that switches itself on when its power source is removed. I have 3 other Garmin devices that do not do it, lights and mobile phones, hearing aids etc that do not do it, in fact, nothing does it except a stupid 530, and probably the 830 and 1030.

But at least twice a week, I am caught out with a flat battery in a morning when getting ready for a ride because the stupid 530 has turned itself on when I have turned off the power source that was charging it, usually the computer or the cars USB port and out of habit from using all my other devices, forget that I must namby pamby my 530 and turn it off. Overnight if it is on the map page, there will only be a few percent of charge left and on a data page just enough for a short ride if I'm lucky depending on how long it has been turned on unnoticed.

Can Garmin never do anything right? It appears that when they do, they eventually manage to pork a perfectly working system, ie, in this case, there is no need for the 530 to turn itself on if power to it is lost, Edges have worked for years without it.

I would try "Auto power off" after a certain time but that facility was removed and not on a 530. As for "Auto sleep", what good is that if on a ride after a mere 5 minutes it goes to sleep if there is no activity, every time on a club ride we stop for a nature break etc, I would be having to wake the stupid thing up holding everybody up or even forgetting to wake it up.

No doubt some idiot will pipe up defending Garmin and the 530's logic on what a wonderful idea it is.

What does the future hold, remove the power button and the Garmin will only turn itself on and off when it moves or stops moving so that by the time you have driven to an event your going to ride, you could have a partially flat battery etc.

It's a good job Garmin don't make electric cars, they would probably start up when you disconnect them from the charging cable.

  • My Edge 130 I just moved from did the  same.  Since that was my first Garmin Edge experience, I'm used to it, but certainly not going to be the idiot to defend it!  Since I'm used to having Edge 130 battery angst, my standard procedure was to be right there to disconnect from charge the moment it was done, which of course then it would turn on... I'd let it sync with my phone then shut down immediately to preserve as much battery as possible.

With the 530 I've done the same.  It's best for these batteries to never fully charge or discharge, so I "manage"  it manually.  For a normal ride where I won't need all the battery capacity I'm removing from charge at 85% with the goal of not going below 45% by end of ride.

So my situation is I'm babying the thing anyway to preserve the battery for the life of the device.  I see no good that can come from the device turning on by itself, but I'm able to deal with it since I'm choosing times to charge when I can check on it and take off charge proactively anyway.

Not really an answer, just an aside as to how I'm managing the battery.

Part two of bad design for me is "auto sleep" can provide a false sense of security, as there isn't any indication that the device is only asleep and not really "off".  I will say that with auto sleep on it doesn't fall asleep during nature breaks for me, perhaps because it's still communicating with my HRM.  (mtb, in the woods breaks, so still right with the bike)

  • It’s been an annoying “feature” for quite a while. I made the same mistake (once!) on a 520, but fortunately I had a USB power bank with me.

BTW, it won’t shut down if an activity is being recorded, so power sources can be freely swapped during a ride.

  • Ah, so "auto sleep" has no effect as long as I'm recording?  That actually makes sense, if I'm understanding correctly.  So they accidentally go part of it right... Lol

  • I've got auto sleep turned off, so I can't be certain about that particular configuration.

  • Ok, but I'm thinking auto sleep likely not active during recording, because I've never had the 130, and now the 530 shut off during longish breaks.  I don't use auto pause, so that's another variable that might be a factor.

  • I agree with you in 100 %. Unfortunately we notice such stupidity in many different things. For example new versions of PC software or Android apps. Many times new version appears much worse than the older. Notice that open software, for example Open Office or Linux, made for free, is developed according to users expectations. We have to do sth with it. In Edge 530 case this problem and others should be widely published in Internet (Facebook). And we  - users - should notify the manufacturer as frequently as possible. By mail and by phone.
