Crazy high training effect from short easy ride

Today I recorded an easy 5 mile, 27 minute ride on my hybrid bike and my Edge 530 calculated a Training Effect of 3.6 Aerobic and 2.5 Anaerobic. This is obviously way too high since I was in heart rate Zone 1 the whole time.

I think the bike computer might have gotten confused because I rode my bike to the local running track, paused the ride, recorded a Track Run activity on my Descent Mk2 watch, and then resumed the ride to return home. Is it possible the Edge 530 used the heart rate data recorded by my HRM-Pro during the Track Run activity to calculate that high Training Effect? Has anyone else seen this kind of failure before?

  • Wow that's really strange. With your HR zone values, there is no way the Load/EPOC should have hit 176 from that ride, or the Aerobic TE 3.6, and definitely zero Anaerobic TE.

My understanding is that the Edge monitors the HR data in real-time to accumulate the Load/EPOC, and thus the TE values. If the Edge is paused, it should stop everything and Load and TE shouldn't accumulate..., just like if the HR sensor was disconnected. If the HR data is not in the FIT file, then it shouldn't be counted in the Load and TE metrics either. So I've no idea how it ended up with those values.

Would be interesting to see what Garmin Support says about it.
