Changing default name of saved tracks?

Hello, I'd like to have another pattern for the saved tracks of may Edge 530. I see no way.

DD.MM.YYYY is not the obvious and simple way to save a file if you would keep track of the generated gpx files. The developers of the GPSMAP66 at least added both variants to save files, even if doubled so....

Any Options to define may own pattern or the desired as pre-configured (YYYY.MM.DD)?

  • Hello, does Garmin ever plans to change this behavior? As I now learned, I have to delete fit files on my device to be able to copy new templates to it but still having empty memory...

This is really a mess, having the better overview in basecamp with a useful ordering and then (next bug in my opinion) have to find these files in another order in windows explorer and delete them here.

Why Garmin does ignore any suggestions to make their products useful? Why even design it like that? Never used it by their own? Sold is sold, next one please?

Seems this will be my last Garmin after several devices, but enough is enough. What makes me really angry is ignorance of any customer demands. Not only that, software is getting worser with time.. This is not worth a cent.

  • The issue appears to be more with BaseCamp than the 530.

    • There is no "name" in the FIT activity file.
    • The files can contain multiple objects. This means that file name isn't used as the name of the object(s) contained in the file.
    • That is, the name of the file is irrelevant. (Changing the name of the file doesn't change what BaseCamp displays.)
    • BaseCamp identifies the track using the date  (inside the file) of the track.
    • It displays the date in the date format defined by the system.
    • Garmin isn't really updating BaseCamp at all (so, don't expect the behavior to change).
    • The problem might occur with FIT files produced by non-Gamin devices.

Presumably, the file from the GPSMAP66 with the name you don't like is the FIT file and the other file is a GPX file.

I'd guess the GPSMAP66 is creating the name inside the file using the date format the device happens to use for the file name. That is, the GPSMAP66  is using the same format to create two things: the file name and the internal name for the track (which is what BaseCamp is displaying).

The GPX file is text, which means it's fairly easy to see what is inside it.

  • Why Garmin does ignore any suggestions to make their products useful?

That Gamin happens to appear to ignore your suggestion doesn't mean that "any" suggestion is ignored.

Your problem is a BaseCamp one (not a device one) and Garmin is doing as little as possible with BaseCamp.

It also could be that not many people have a problem with the way BaseCamp does this.

What makes me really angry is ignorance of any customer demands.

This isn't the official way to make suggestions anyway. Garmin likely gets many suggestions and won't respond to all of them.

  • Thanks for the explanation. A discussion about which Garmin product the reason may be is no help. A solution for a bad handling would be. But on the other hand it helps me making my final decision.

Btw: everybody I was talking with using Garmin Software is rolling eyes. Believe me: many people have problems with the products, the Nokia moment will come maybe to other companies ignoring customers...

    Best redards

  • No other company has anything quite like BaseCamp.

Also, it appears Garmin wanted to discontinue BaseCamp but didn’t because people still wanted to use it.

Not sure what you are using it for but something like My Tourbook might do what you need.

  • My expectation and usage is quite simple described above..

I see, you're not interested in a solution, you keep telling me Garmin is a perfect product and the problem is the customer.

  • No, don’t be silly.

I’m saying Garmin isn’t going to change BaseCamp, which means you have to deal with how it works.

The only way the date format would be an actual issue is if you kept multiple years of activities in one folder.

So, a solution would be to have a folder for each year.

  • The GPSMAP66 shows the desired format, so Basecamp may be not that essential problem..
And: I already organize in folders, but there is a numer of about 10 records a week. You see the effort getting rid of a part and keep certain records by switching between file system and basecamp and additionally problem of messy sorting in basecamp, no matter what reason it is?
Again: Combined with other problems described above (not possible to delete unwanted records on device via Basecamp as it is with GPSMAP66) and trying hours to copy files to the device (there seems to be a invisible maximum number of files allowed, but still free space, took me hours to investigate that) it is a handling, that you can keep trying to sell me as fine. It isn't.
BTW: "No other company has anything quite like a Nokia" might be one of the last thougts of Nokia designers... of course there are other products. I use basecamp mainly because it is the only way to exchange files to the device the easiest (or even only) way.

  • ???

I explained what was likely going on with the GPSMAP66 files. And why the FIT files work they way they do.

Moving 10 files a week before or so (you don’t have to do it every week) is no real effort and doing so makes a copy of the files (which might be useful as a backup anyway).

If you have folders for each year, the order of the files within each year is exactly the same.

You can use the file explorer/manager program on your computer to copy/move files to/from the devices.

Very few Edge device owners use BaseCamp.

Garmin isn’t going to change BaseCamp.
