Mark time?

I ride with a 360 degree video camera to capture pics of interest or if a bike incident occurs (nothing serious yet thank goodness). I don’t know if the 530 can do this, but I would like to start the camera and the 530 recording at the same time and then mark my time on the 530 when I see something of interest. This way I would have a time that I could easily look up in the video after the ride and get a still image. Without something like this I just have to try to remember where the items of interest might be on the footage. On a 4 hour ride that is really tedious.

I’ve thought about using the lap timer for this, but it only takes into account Moving Time. With all the stops that can happen on any given ride, the two become out of sync quickly. I guess I could turn off the auto-pause, but then my average speed would take a big hit and not be accurate. Anything in possibly missing that might help me here?

  • If you turn off auto pause you can see your moving average speed in Garmin Connect.

  • Thanks. I didn’t know that, but I think it introduces another problem, that is, wouldn’t avg speed displayed on the 530 take a hit without auto-pause?  I need to be able to see my accurate avg speed while riding.

  • Unfortunately you can't have a moving average speed without auto pause on with Edge units using the average speed data field.

Maybe you could with an iq app but I don't know if it is possible that way.

Garmin GPSMap units have moving average and overall average speed data fields so Garmin could do it on Edge units.

  • Thanks.  Yea, I looked at the Connect IQ apps.  They do have a stopwatch, but no lap timer (go figure).  I find it disappointing that a Garmin product like this doesn't have the flexibility to accomplish such a simple time function.  Sorry for the rant, but Garmin should stop resting on the laurels of their past and look to modernize their products.  Have they really changed that much in the last 8 years?  Not really.  I want to say I spent something like $390 for my 530 back in the day.  I remember trying to configure it just how shocked I was that I had to press some hard buttons hundreds of times just to set it up.  It just made me wonder if they've even seen an iPhone.  Ok, rant over.  Sorry.  Calm blue ocean. Slight smile

  • Two ways that you can do it and I use both, usually for marking the location of a pothole etc or something of interest.

The first way, I just press my lap button twice with a few seconds pause between each press. It will record a lap of just a few yards and then when you look at your downloaded ride, you can see that very short lap. But, if your training using laps or for some other purpose, then the second way is best.

The second way is, to set up the "Power" button to take a screenshot of your map page or a data page with distance ridden, elapsed time, time of day, ride time etc on it, or take a screenshot off both.. Its then just a simple case of looking at your screenshot later to find where you was. The screenshots are easy to navigate as they have a date stamp so it makes it easy to find what your looking for.

You could even take a screenshot of your GPS coordinates and then find it in Google Earth later when you get home as to where you was.

  • If you have a smartphone...and want a handsfree method to make a note while riding...

    Me: Hey siri

    Me: Make a note

Siri: What do you want it to say?

Me: Pitbull, don't come around here no more...and whatever you're looking for...hey...1300 hours   ;)

  • The simple (but not elegant) way of getting a moving average is to use a basic cycle computer with its auto start/stop enabled. Disable auto pause on the Garmin and use the lap button for time stamping your video moments as has already been suggested.
