Garmin Edge 530 Speed fluctuates

Hi everyone!

My Garmin Edge 530 has a persistent problem. While I am stopped, the speed fluctuates for no apparent reason, going randomly from 0 km/h to 27 km/h.

Here you have an example, while I was sitting on a chair opening this thread.

It really messes my activities, because when I go for a ride and I stop (traffic lights, cafe, etc) speed fluctuates messing all the stats.

I know I can set a threshold to prevent it from starting, but sometimes the random speed displayed is above 20 km/h, which is pretty high leaving this solution useless.

My software version is 9.10, it says there are no updates available and every now and then I get this notification saying "download failed", but no idea why or what is that that tries to download.

I would appreciate any help, thank you!

Jorge

  • If your using a speed sensor (check the forum about sensor dropouts), some people are saying disconnect blutooth to phone which might be causing a problem. with GPS settings have both GPS and Glognass for greater accuracy, the speed sensor works with GPS as whilst your riding the sensor will calibrate the wheel circumference, if you go into the sensor details it will have the wheel circumference size, you can either use auto or manual, depending on your tire as my 700c x23 tire is measure 2080mm (I have set manually), yours could be around 2094mm. so you can check the circumference while you ride and see if the size goes up and down using the automatic setting.

  • Hi, thank you for your response.

I do not have a speed sensor and I do not have a cadence sensor either. I only have the Garmin Edge 530 device.

  • Having purchased the GPS unit (530) it is annoying to have to get something else but a speed sensor is the only solution that I know of to this problem and greatly improves the accuracy of the unit for both speed and GPS location drift.

  • Hi, thank you very much for your response.

It is indeed really annoying that I have to spend 60 GBP more to make it work accurately and I was afraid that would be the only solution.

Thank you again and I guess I will need to get down that road.

  • It might be worth taking it up with Garmin Support. Whilst using a speed sensor may be a fix, it isn’t the underlying cause. Mine works fine without a sensor (GPS+Glonass, FW 9.1, GPS version 4.8)

  • Thank you Peter!

I have tried that and sadly they said that without the GPS that is a regular thing to happen and suggested that I should buy the speed sensor. I dont think it makes any sense and I agree with you, it should not be the underlying cause. So far no clue what may be happening.

  • My unit came bundled with a speed sensor which I use on my main MTB.  But I also use the Edge with multiple other bikes and I don't notice behavior like you are seeing.  My settings are like PeterK_55, everything up to date with latest software.  Maybe try a compass calibration?

  • Thank you for your replay.

I will definitely give that a shot a will let you know how it goes. Thanks again!
