Lap markers - confusion - advice requested

I've recently started riding a loop that keeps me out of heavy traffic and gives me a nice work-out when I do 6 laps which is about 25km. First time I used auto lap it worked fine as I started it at the beginning of the loop and it clocked up the laps perfectly. The next time I'd already started the ride on my edge at home and tried to mark a lap start position at the top of the loop. This didn't work because it was still set to trigger the lap at the start of the ride, so basically it recorded 1 lap of 25km.  Today I again started my ride at home and marked lap start at the top of the loop which clocked a new lap when I passed that point but clocked another lap a few feet later giving one correct lap time etc and one of a few seconds. Has my Edge retained the earlier marker I set and if so how do I remove them ? I have the settings as follows: Auto Lap Trigger - By position , Lap At - Mark and Lap.

Surely I can start my ride and just press the lap button (bottom left) when I arrive at the top of the loop ?

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated

Cheers and Happy New Year

Dave

  • Hi, and HNY :) I haven't used this feature yet myself, so my understanding is only based on the manual.

It sounds like the best autolap option for your case may be "Mark and Lap". Mark a location for the start/end of your loop using the map options. The marked location can be saved for future use. The autolap should automatically start new laps when you reach that location. You don't need to press the Lap button (if you do, it may trigger twice, and it sounds like that's what happened in your case).

It's difficult to sort out what happened previously without knowing your exact settings, buttons presses, etc. It sounds like the marked location is already saved (maybe more than once). Steps to delete saved locations: https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/edge530/EN-US/GUID-520745EB-8C2C-4D68-9F25-50535B8595EF.html

You could also do this without a marked location, and manually press the lap button at the start/end of each loop, but it doesn't sound as ideal.

    Hope that helps!

Edit: here are the location options (mark, save, etc): www8.garmin.com/.../GUID-8BD32AC3-4779-4BA1-B717-ABEEBC7E0145.html

  • Hi Kyle

HNY to you and many thanks for taking the time and making the effort to reply. I've followed your advice and checked in saved locations, only the Garmin defaults are in there so it looks like it's cleared whatever markers I put in last time. Next time out I'm going with the Mark & Lap option. When you say Mark the location using Map options and this can be saved for future use, can you steer me in the right direction because I was thinking I just hit the lap button to mark position but obviously it would be better to save it as you suggest.

    Thanks once again

    Dave

  • Hmm, if there's no saved locations in the device, it sounds like a mystery to me too. The manual is pretty weak and the Garmin Edge menus are spaghetti (in my opinion).

On mine I turned on the "Mark and Lap" option and noticed that another menu item appears right below it called "Mark Location". If I use that, nothing immediately obvious happens. No new point shows up in the Save Locations menu, and I don't see any markers added to the map. I think it simply tags my current location and saves it "invisibly" in the device. If true, then that means I have to ride to the lap start/end location first, use that option to mark it, and then start doing the laps. That's not very useful in my opinion. And I don't see any option to clear the marked location. Maybe toggling Mark and Lap on/off/on clears it?

The manual says Mark and Lap will trigger "at a specific GPS location marked before the ride", but the above seems to contradict that. If I can only mark my current location, then I already have to be at the desired spot, which is not "before the ride"! Confused...

Re-reading the manual again, I think now that "Lap Press Only" makes more sense. The part I missed the first time is that it triggers not only when you press the Lap button, but also "and each time you pass any of those locations again". So you should only need to press the Lap button once, at the start of the first lap, and then after that it should automatically trigger each time you pass the same point again, without needing to press the Lap button again. That sounds a lot more useful to me that the Mark and Lap option now.

I note it also mentions that if you are using the navigation to follow a saved course, it can trigger at "saved locations" in the course. It doesn't say how those locations get saved in the course though...

So maybe in your case turn off Mark and Lap, switch to Lap Press Only instead. Hopefully that clears any marked location in the device. Then do your ride and hit the Lap button when you reach the start point of the loop the first time, and don't hit it again after that.

  • I have auto lap via "lap press only" on my Race activity profile and it works just as you describe.  I used it during lap events and I have to remember to press the lap button at the lap finish line after completing the first lap. But from then on, it will automatically trigger a lap each time I cross the finish again.  I think there is an option for start and lap as well?  This will include the activity starting point as another lap trigger.  I have never tried the "Mark and lap" option

  • Thanks Kyle & EWarner, I’ve only just picked up on this again as I’ve been out of action,  but the points raised by you both have given me food for thought. Just upgraded to 1030 plus so I’m going to try my laps again and watch for the Start and lap option clocking 2 start points  which is what I think I was doing
