Edge 530 training status not updating from Zwift rides

Recently my training status has stopped updating from data from Zwift rides. Seems to have happened after the most recent Zwift update.  Rides are showing up in Garmin Connect and on the Edge under "rides" after syncing.  Any thoughts?

  • Do you record them with garmin device?

  • No, I was told you didn't need to do that anymore as Garmin could use rides from Zwift (and a few other services) automatically without having to run btoh Zwift and the Edge separately (you just needed to sync your device so it could pull the ride from Garmin connect). My Edge actually did this for my first couple of Zwift rides earlier this month.

  • I tried it a year ago and it didn't work. Rides uploaded to Garmin connect from Zwift didn't affect training status.

  • I think that makes sense. Most metrics that Garmin uses are calculated in the Edge devices themselves, during and/or at the end of the activity. Those then get uploaded to Garmin Connect, they aren't calculated by GC itself. So if GC gets an activity from another source (such as Zwift), then there is no Edge device involved, so those metrics don't get calculated. The Edge simply receives the activity from GC during sync, without those metrics.

If you saw it updating previously, I suspect that may have been updates as the old activities faded out of your history, since the metrics are based on training windows of about 7 days to 4 weeks (depending on the specific metric). After all your old Edge-recorded activities faded out, there would be no further updates to those metrics.

What I do is record my Zwift rides on the Edge itself, just like an outdoor ride, so I continue to have those metrics. (Separately I have Zwift uploading to Strava.) It's technically "dual-recording", but it works.

EDIT: Ok I need to correct myself, I just saw this post again on DC Rainmaker saying that Garmin will now update Training Status (but not Training Effect) for rides uploaded from Zwift (and others). But it requires 2 rounds of syncing between Garmin Connect and the Edge device. The first sync sends the activity to the Edge (where I believe the Training Status metrics are calculated from the activity data), and then the second sync sends it back to Garmin Connect.

I forgot this was added this year, I really need to check it out!  But now I'm at a loss as to why your Training Status is not updating like it was before. Might be worth asking Garmin support.

  • Haha...me too! I've contacted Garmin support and we'll see if they can help fix it... hopefully without a hard reset as setting everything back up again is always a pain!

  • So I realize this doesn't help your case, but on today's Zwift ride I tried out that option to send Zwift data directly to Garmin Connect. It worked and my Training Status updated correctly. (I don't think I'll use it though, as I lose out a number of other metrics that I have recording with the Garmin Edge instead. Although having the activity "map", elevation profile, and correct speed is certainly nice!)

Skimmed the comments on that DCR link above and noted quite a few people saying it wasn't working for them, particularly back in the summer when it was released. Some people had weird issues like they needed a Garmin ride first before the Zwift rides would update the Training Status (or something like that).
