Stop workouts advancing automatically

Hi all

When I complete a structured workout on my Garmin, the reality of life is that I might have, say, a 5 minute break between intervals planned but the actual road takes me 6 minutes to get to the bottom before I can start my next interval.

The issue I have is that after 5 minutes the Garmin workout on my unit automatically begins the next interval even though I’m not yet ready.

Is there any way to stop the unit from advancing to the next interval automatically, or do I need to click the “go back” button each time?

Thanks a mil!

  • I had the same problem years ago, rest step coinciding with having a hill climb and the interval step coinciding with a fast descent until I found out how to use the lap button in a workout

My workaround was to create my rest step to be "ended" by pressing the lap button and then it advances to the  next interval step.

I actually use the lap button quiet a lot, especially for "Off the cuff" workouts that I plan in my head as I ride. Once I want an interval step to start, I press the lap button, in conjunction with having a "lap time" data field set up, I know when to stop that step by once again pressing the lap button after a minute or two etc by the lap timer data field and I can then have a rest step or increase the intensity of the previous step etc. Using the lap page, you can keep a check of what you have done.

It is even easier to do if you use the Garmin remote with its dedicated lap button, and then the other buttons for the data pages that you use to switch between quick.

  • Thanks for this reply! My issue is I want a workout to load on the Garmin that my coach has created for me. I need to follow it on the Garmin as there are so many changes to time and power that I can’t remember them all on my own. But the issue is in real life the breaks that he gives me in the structured workout don’t always coincide with the right place on the road when doing the workout outside as opposed to on the indoor trainer?

  • You need to ask your coach to edit the workouts so that your resting times only end after you press the lap button. On TrainingPeaks the workout builder has a toggle button "End step on lap button" for every single step. It is set to off by default. You can change this in the edit workout area very easily.

The only thing i have found (i might have done something wrong) is that i don't get the timer countdown, instead i get a countup. This means you need to have an idea what your ideal interval time is if you are trying to stick closely to it.

  • This is really helpful! Thank you

  • But what was that not what I suggested, stop your rest times by use of the lap button when your ready for the next stage?

  • it was exactly what you suggested  - just in a bit more detail !

  • You can get the best of both worlds by leaving the timed step in place and following it up with the lap button step. I like to go even further - particularly for sprints - and put a short countdown after the lap button so I can get my hand back on the bars.
