Strava Live Segments - ability to choose comparison effort

It would be really great if there was some ability to choose comparison effort, beyond PR, KOM, and nearest competitor.  I know the Karoo 2 provides this ability.

For mountain biking, all of the segments I care about are saturated by winter times, which are many minutes faster than summer times.  Even my own PR is a winter time, which is 2 minutes faster than my summer PR.  I'd really like the ability to select one of my own efforts (aside from PR) to be able to compare to during a segment.

Does anyone else feel this way about live segments, or is it just me?

  • I think you can make a workaround for this.  You can set a goal for a segment from within the Strava environment.  Then make sure your Edge's leaderboard priority is set to have Goal as top of the list.

  • Well, I've thought about that.  But I suspect that the "goal" time doesn't include a real GPS track.  Part of the power of Live Segments is that is compares your progress with the actual GPS track of the comparison effort.  I.e. if I set a goal for a 5 km segment of 5 minutes, the device can only assume that by 2.5km in, I need to be at 2.5 minutes, and calculated Behind/Ahead based on that.  Live segments allow actual progress comparison, which is useful if average speed varies along the segment.

  • I totally agree. Even after using the Strava Live Segments on my Garmins (1030 and 530) quite a while now, I still haven’t figured out what some of the effort options do mean. Obviously, there is KOM and PB of some people I follow, then my PB (which happened quite a while ago and is beyond reach at the moment Sweat smile) but what do the other two best-efforts mean?? My Garmin is in German, so I don’t know the terms used in English, translated from German it would be “last best (time)” and “last (time)”. Apart from KOM and PB which might not be realistic (anymore) I would appreciate the possibility to see different PB options like “last 1, 3 or 6 month’s Best” “this year’s PB”, “last year’s PB”, etc. This would be much more helpful, especially when building up the training effort… (I could start writing now about different PBs for my different bikes, but I won’t (this time) Wink
