Edge 530 Europe version - will it read OSM maps from Asia?

Hi,

I was told by Garmin support that a Edge 530 bought in the UK will not read maps that contain far east Asia characters (e.g. Japanese). I wonder if free OSM maps of Japan are available in English and if anybody had experience with that. Also, besides the the map itself, I'd like to know if the device also cannot display any information in other menus (like climbs data) if this is described in far east characters.
