Garmin edge 530 disappointment…

I just got my 530 today and from being excited have become quite disappointed with the product. I initially had an edge 130 and was very impressed with it so wanted more features like mapping etc. The main bug bearer I have is that coming from the 130 the screen is bad, really bad. In 2021 this is not acceptable I’m amazed how this got past QA!? Yes it has colour but it’s like using a Nokia from the 90’s. Really not good enough for the money especially when compared to the competition like wahoo etc. Sort it out Garmin! I really wanted to love it but the screen is just so bad.

If the 130 had proper navigation it would be perfect. It’s small compact well priced and good looking. This is a great product. However not the 530. The other areas I wasn’t impressed with on the 530 are the feel of the contact points (buttons). Again the 130 has better feel and the buttons are more precise. Finally the materials seem to be of higher quality on the 130 the plastic casing is less shiny and cheap looking and even the garmin logo the way it’s embossed into the plastic front looks better. At this stage I will be going to look at a wahoo or maybe a 130 plus and continue to use my iPhone for mapping and navigation. If Apple make a bike computer Garmin will be dead in the water if this is the best of their efforts. Poor show guys! I’m sure a lot of people are satisfied with this sub standard quality but for £260 personally I don’t think it’s acceptable. Certainly if I worked in your QA I would be throwing it at the person who signed it off and telling them to address those fundament flaws (contacts points and screen very important).

  • here’s an example of the potato display in operation. The photo does it a credit in that it actually looks better  it’s operating normally I checked but when you switch it on you’re taken aback by how poor the quality is (or at least I am);

  • We are many in the same situation. If I had actually seen a 530 before in reality, I'm not so sure anymore, I would have upgraded the 130. It would seem that a solution would be to let the screen light always on with the intensity on auto. (which, however, maintains the long battery life)

    While we each have our reasons for upgrading, for example I am not interested in navigation which I do not like and do not use anyway, I was interested to have a good control of notifications, I was badly surprised to notice that I cannot modify/add new replies. (like forerunner 245 for example)

    I have the same filing about the buttons.

    It's probably good for professionals who use a lot of sensors but for average user I think it’s most important the screen.

    I would like much more a 530 with SCREEN, BUTTONS and SOUND inherited from 130.

  • Coming also from the 130+, I was pretty surprised by that bad screen. I could easily read my 130+ in any lighting condition outdoor. The 530, however, is often not easily readable, especially in navigation mode. I can live with it but well, a bit disappointed...

  • But you are aware that this is a user forum - not a forum to interact with garmin employees, right?

  • Who knows, maybe there are some garmin employees between user forums... :)  (hidden in the "darkness" of the screens)

  • If they are serious about their products, they should be watching these forums.

  • And this is one of the main reasons for unsuccessful purchases. Based on expectations, not reality.

  • I am surprised at how disappointed you are. I rate the 530 highly and find the screen more than adequate. I suggest you look a bit deeper into why garmin use a screen like this - the answer is battery life. Your comment about Apple doesn’t really hold up. Apple already do make a fitness device and it has just about a days battery life. I have the Apple Watch series 6 and using gps all day as I do on the garmin is out of the question.

  • I agree, I have far from perfect sight but have no issue with the screen in all conditions.  Plus 5 hour ride today, many sensors (Di2, power meter, speed, HRM, varia radar light, remote control) and still have 60% battery left.  The remote is a great add-on, can rotate through screens without taking hands from the bars.

  • The discussion was about comparing screens of 130 vs 530. We all know about a ton of options and good battery life.
