Navigate Course In Reverse?

I see that questions about course reversal are over 2 years old, which means that Garmin hasn't fixed, no, added this function.  I came from the Wahoo world, and it was so easy to start course reversal navigation. I run Garmin displays and navigation avionics in my airplane and like them a lot. Surely Garmin has software engineers that can implement this function, don't they?  If they don't, well, what will they say about Garmin?  Two plus years time is plenty to implement this highly needed function.  I'm running 8.20, BTW.

  • I bought a Edge 800 when they first came out many years ago and they were bugged and incapable of doing a simple time and distance calculation, after only about 4 updates, it was never fixed and the 800 abandoned. I vowed never to buy another Garmin Edge.

A few months back, I relented after thinking that Garmin must have got it right by now. After my first ride, I saw that Time and Distance calculations are still flawed and cannot work out a correct time or ETA to destination accurately all the time and it can be hours out.

So basically, a 2 year time scale is not in the realms of Garmin to fix anything.

  • No doubt you are correct. It's interesting that in the aviation world, Garmin is viewed as the best with a good line of competitors playing catch up.  They have their pluses, though, and have captured a substantial piece of the market.

But the aviation market is a lot different than ground based activities.  You screw up in the aviation world, and you have a lot of people breathing down your neck with lawsuits and disdain. If the Edges were scrutinized like in the aviation world, no doubt there would be very few bugs at product introduction and quick fixes thereafter. Those very few bugs would be the result of extensive testing prior to release. They involve sets of standardized test vectors whose development is where a lot of the money is spent.  Thereafter, any changes would go through those test vectors to see if anything else has changed. No doubt Garmin hasn't spent the money to develop those vectors; otherwise, they could easily run the vectors to test Edges against them when fixing bugs AND adding new functions like course reversal.  Our loss.

  • It seems to me that a lot of things are flawed with Garmin. Even this forum, if I try to reply to a message, I usually end up on the Garmin home page no matter how many times I try.

Even trying to put a "Like" to "1638649"s posting, just takes me to the Home Page and once again, no matter how many times I try..

And as for trying the new beta update, its not so much about what it will fix, but what will it break.

But, no doubt Garmin will soon come out with their usual patter, "It will be fixed in the next model".

  • It doesn't seem there are any other people experiencing your homepage problem. It might not be Garmin.

  • Once I get time today, I'm going to try Beta 8.63 or whatever it's numbered.  If I don't like it, I'll go back to 8.20.

In response to dpawlyk, he may be correct.  It may be your operating system or browser that's causing your homepage problem.  I get such problems frequently when my VPN, ad blocking and tracker blocking are on, either individually or in combinations.  I just put a like on your message above, and it worked. I'm not putting a like as a test.  I really do appreciate your input here.

  • Navigation on 530 is so unconfortable sometimes. No reverse course, information about "off course" statying on screen and need to be dissmised by button etc. Navigation on my old trusty etrex 30 was so much better.
