Configure Edge from the app

I will keep annoying people here until progress is made.

Wahoo and Sigma got this right: Configure and control the bike computer from the partner app on the phone. Settings, maps, datafields. Everything would be nicer. Especially for the peasants out here not being able to afford the touch display devices 830 and above.

Pretty please.

  • But this should be added as an option - not as a replacement for the existing form of configuration. On Edge, I can quickly change the data field while driving, while recording activity. Try doing this on Wahoo without pulling out your phone.

  • When Wahoo's came out, riders I knew and in forums, they raved about how good they were by being able to configure them with your phone. But, it all changed within a few months and it became the opposite how riders despised having to use there phones to configure their Wahoo's. Club rides etc would come to a halt, just because someone wanted to change their settings and had to get their phones out to do it. Cafe stops were similar, conversation would be "Out of the Window" as phones came out and new routes etc loaded onto the Wahoo to continue and we could not set off till everyone was ready.

Myself, I would rather a Wahoo over a Garmin as they are far better, but, I would not use a device that has to be configured with a phone, no matter how much a pain it is, I prefer to use the buttons and just slow down riding to do it safely. From what I have seen other riders doing if it was forced on me to use a phone to configure a device, I would rather use my phone or tablet as my navigation, training device mounted on my bars as from what I have seen in my car, they do a better job than a Garmin and certainly get "Time and Distance" calculations correct.

But, from what I have seen, riders now once again seem to have a preference to Wahoo's, maybe it is now far better to be messed about having to use your phone to configure the Wahoo than mess about using their menu's on a Garmin which can be hard to read or find things. For example the "Activity Profile" system, having to select a colour for it which in reality, serves no purpose, light yellow and other light colours and white text is unreadable and likewise, Dark Blue and other dark colours and black text, once again unreadable.

As mentioned, it should be an option.

  • As said. Yes, this should be optional. I'd guess garmin isn't doing this because of their touch devices. They don't want to undermine their selling points.

However The Configuration from the phone is not the only issue.
The data fields dont have previews. And since there are a million available (which is great) it takes time to get to know them.
Imo it would be much nicer to have a handbook online showing all the available datafields.

Next issue is the route creating on the phone. It's just not up to todays standards. Tedious to use. Moreover you have to end your activity if you spontaneuosly decide to plan a route mid ride. Syncing doesn't work otherwise. Really frustrating if you want to set new records or just have a single activity for whatever reason.

Upcoming: Wahoo is stepping up the game with fitness monitoring. The insights garmin provides are very useful, but the design is neither appealing nor intuitive.

Today tried to zoom in the maps while riding. For whatever reason all the trails and roads disappeared and only streams were left.

I'm trying to love the garmin. But the experience reminds me of the first gps devices for cars.

If the battery life wasn't so much better on the garmin I would just use my phone.

All the possible datafields are listed in the full manual which is readily available as a pdf from the Garmin website.  Go to the product page of the device in question and you will find a link to the manual.  It can be viewed on line or downloaded as a pdf.

  • Thank you for the hint. However this is just plain text, not a graphical illustration.

  • As the data fields are all pretty much all just numbers do you need an image of them all?  Surely just a description of what each one displays is enough for pretty much all of them?

  • They look different depending on the layout sizes.
Sometimes the Text sounds good but the datafield looks bad to me.
I just think it would be good customer service.

I'm second here. I was really disappointed when found out that there is no way to sync a spontaneous track mid-ride. And I really can't get why it is not implemented natively, especially given that tracks can be uploaded mid-ride via 3rd party connect IQ apps.

  • Thanks for Your feedback!
Which 3rd party app are you talking about?
