Training Load Different between Zwift recorded workout and Edge 530 recorded workout

I am using an Edge 530 riding with a Wahoo Kickr trainer on Zwift. I recorded a workout simultaneously with the 530 on Indoor Cycling and on Zwift to compare the results. I was surprised to see that the training load was quite different between the two. I've done this twice and both workouts had significant differences.  For Example:

Ride 1 - Sept 30 - Zwift training load 535 / Edge 530 Training load 214

Ride 2 - Oct 2 - Zwift training load 329 / Edge 530 training load 176

I'm confused by this as from what I understand the Load should be calculated on the 530 in both cases and both data sources are recording the same information from the same workout. Has anyone else seen this or know what is going on?

  • Thinking Zwift is taking into account elevation where the 530 cannot.

  • Make sure the zone settings and FTP number are the same on your Garmin and in Zwift.  If they don't match you will see this sort of thing.

  • I submitted this to Garmin and got the following response back in December:

"The issue you reported about inaccurate training load from Zwift has been fixed in an update to Garmin Connect!   This fix will only apply to new activities. Thank you for choosing Garmin"

I don't know what they fixed other than they said it was an issue with how data was imported and calculated.  Since that time the training load between the Edge 530 and Zwift has matched within a few points when I've dual recorded activities so I would say it is fixed.
