Navigation map

On the navigation map that pops up when you approach a turning, how do you alter the two data fields at the bottom, ie Direction and time to go before the turn, I have searched every where and cannot find the settings unless it is well hidden. Both of them I have no use for, ie, I do not need to know if I'm heading South or North etc or the time given is pointless, when the map pops up and says I turn in 30 seconds, I know I am going to turn in that time, but that time is changeable as I may slow down, but more importantly, I have no way of knowing how far down a road to look that could be 30 seconds away to look for a junction, especially in a town.

Preferably, I would rather see "Distance to Next" as then, I know to look about 100 yards down the road for my turning and plan my speed etc to make the turn and speed etc will not affect that distance unlike time can be.

Also, can the distance that the navigation window pops up be changed, ie, mine pops up every time at 0.3 of a mile and stays on which is too far away, all it does is obscure the data fields I want especially when I am pacing a fast ride and is a nuisance as I then have to get rid of the navigation map by pressing the buttons and breaks the rythmn of the pace.

  • I know it's no longer current - but can't find anywhere to download Garmin Training Centre

  • It seems the plug has been pulled on Garmin Training Center downloads as I have just read that they want you to use Garmin Connect instead as it has more "Benefits".

But, it is available from here:-

Download Garmin Training Center Free (soft32.com)

I use version 3.6.5. There is a version 5 banded about, but nothing happens if you try and download it  now and if I recall from years ago, it is only 3.6.5.when you installed it.

Following on my tests, GTC works a treat for inserting "Course Points", far better than Garmin Connect..

I did a ride today on my usual "Hard" route and overloaded my route with lots of "Course Points" with a view of maybe using them this weekend on an event. Sadly thought, it did not work, I had made an error on loading the course onto the Garmin. Instead of loading the course as a TCX, I loaded it as a GPX due to rushing and no navigation data for"Course Points" showed even though they was on the map, when I investigated, they had all been saved as "Locations"

Redoing it when I got home, everything works perfect with a TCX file, navigation data shows along with a list and symbols on the map, perfect.

One thing that you would need to do, is use Garmin Mapsource and install the OSM maps into that, and then they would show up as well in GTC, unless it also works with Garmin Base Camp, but, Garmin Mapsource also by a large margin is a better route planner than Basecamp. Garmin have gone backwards in reality and just come up with junk these days.

One thing I did notice today though, I find on my 530, I cannot change the icon/symbol for the "Course Point" or a "Location" anymore, I can change the "Title" etc and "Comment", but the menu to change the icon/ Symbol, no longer exists.. I know last weekend I could do it because I did it for a couple of back to back events to mark the checkpoints a bit more clearer.

But, 3 days ago, I installed this new "Beta" update, maybe it has something to do with it as on my ride today I saw some strange behaviour especially with the data field "Time to Dest" which is unreliable usually, but today it kept getting confused with something. One minute it would state almost the correct time in hours and minutes, then it would change to minutes and seconds and do a countdown to Zero, then go back to hours and minutes. I did not have time to check it, but, it might have had something to do with "Climb Pro" and the Navigation map for turns as I noticed the countdown to Zero, would coincide with getting to the top of a climb or making the turn. But, on occasions on the Navigation map, "Heading" would not be displayed, but instead "Dist to Point" (something like that) but the "Time to Point" would always just read 00:00. I never managed to get a screen shot and it eventually stopped doing it.
