Why are "Timings" so far wrong?

On virtually every ride I do, "Time to Dest" is usually wrong, or the "VP" is wrong and both totally unreliable: Yesterday, I took a series of screenshots to show the gross errors in the 530. Is it just my 530 which is faulty, or everybody else's 530. I know my old 800 was unreliable for "Time to Dest" and would only sort itself out in the last couple of miles on a course, but at least the "VP" worked which I use a lot, but on the 530, neither of them are usable and have to use another cycling computer to give me an accurate time to destination on my long distance events.

The course I rode was a ride that I had previously done and saved as a new course on the 530. It had an average speed of 13.75 MPH (slow going with the hills) and the VP was set at 15 MPH. Auto Pause was set to when I was stopped.

Software Version 8.2

Before commencing the ride, I had left the bike and 530 outside for about 15+ minutes so it would be well stabilised with a good fix on the satellite's etc which is what I have done for years. On commencing the ride I pressed the "Start Button" and at the first opportunity which according to the screenshot was 2 minutes 4 seconds, checked that everything was OK on the 530 as I went through the pages, and found that I was already 19 minutes ahead of the VP, but only 221' ahead. That time must coincide with turning on the 530 and not when I pressed the "Start Button".

Even more remarkable, my time to a destination of 54 miles would be 1 hr 53 minutes based on an average speed of 13.8 mph. That too is nonsense.

After 17 minutes though, the VP had sorted itself out which it usually does not, but time to destination was still way out.

After 25.56 miles, time to destination, 1 hour, but the distance to destination is 28.79 miles and based on the average speed of 14.4, the time to destination should be around 2 hours?

With 14.09 miles to destination, time to destination reads 31 minutes 45 seconds, but based on an average speed of 14.1 mph, it should be about an hour to destination.

So basically, time to destination is out by at least half of what it should be on this ride.

And then when I ride over my outward track for a short distance and eventually with 3 miles to go, the 530 gets confused as its telling me my distance to destination is now 50.86 miles, and then suddenly comes up with just 3.16 miles to go and it will take me 9 minutes 32 seconds

This is what I see all the time on my 530, is it normal for a 530 or is it not working correctly and needs replacing?

  • There's a similar post on the same forum, so my answer:

This drives me nuts. I deliberately set a pace in garmin connect and i have a similar number for my virtual partner (not sure if relevant) at around 26kph. When you load the route it says this on the summary page on the edge. But when the user hits "ride" my unit will use around 21kph. It's very annoying when I'm trying to assess when I'll be home.
