Does Navigation allow for this?

I went out on a 50 mile ride today that was pretty close to an "out and back."  I got to 25 miles and headed back.  At about 35 miles, I got lost.  So I thought, no worries, I have my Garmin.  Let me have it tell me how to get back home.  I selected Navigation and it asked me to choose 1) the most direct route to the start OR 2) to choose the route I came on (something like that).  So I knew the direct route to the start would not be good because I knew the direct route was in high traffic areas.  I needed the route I originally went on so I chose the other option.  Here was the problem.  The dumb computer literally thought I wanted to retrace my steps from that point.  So rather take me back on my route that I had only had 15 miles to complete, it took me the exact opposite way attempting to have me backtrack through what I had already completed and then come back through right where I was already sitting.  Fortunately, I figured out it was doing this after only a few miles and just turned navigation off.

So what do you do in a situation like this?  Is there a way to force the computer to tell it I don't want to retrace all my steps and that I want it to pick up at a different point?  Seems like there should be a way to do this.
