speed sensor shows as equipment for a connected friend but not for me - why?

Hi - just noticed that for one of my connected friends in Garmin Connect, the info about his activities will show BOTH the Edge 530 used for recording AND that a speed sensor was used, see below screen shot from an actual ride as I see it through the News section in Connect. I NEVER see that for my own activities, even if always also using a speed sensor for tracking the activity.

What is the difference? Would it indicate an issue with speed sensor not working correctly?

  • I remember reading about this when I first got my bundle long ago, so the details are fuzzy.  But what I think is happening is that the speed sensor actually does data logging as well.  If you pair it to your GC app via bluetooth, then it can provide ride logs in addition to the Edge device and the result would be like your friend is having.

"The speed sensor 2 attaches to the hub of either wheel. You can set up wheel size in our Garmin ConnectTm online community or self-calibrate with an Edge® cycling computer or compatible Garmin device. Once set up, you’ll get accurate speed and distance at all times — even without a head unit.

ANT+® connectivity and BLUETOOTH® Low Energy technology let you sync to Garmin Connect and other training apps, compatible devices and fitness equipment for better data when you ride indoors and outdoors. "

  • Ah, thanks - that sounds like a plausible explanation.

  • For more context, I have not paired my speed sensor with GC app.  Just with the Edge head unit.  I do not see it in my GC app and it seems to behave like you see in your own devices.  Everything behaves as expected and seems normal to me.
