Garmin Edge 530 loosing sensors

This is very weird, because it happens on all sensors

  • Heart Rate (Garmin Tri)
  • Shimano Di2
  • Power Sensor (Vector 3 left side only)

First time I noticed was the heart rate, and I believed it was a battery problem on the sensor, so I replaced it, but the previous battery was at 3.2v, so lot of juice!

the problem continue to happen and then today  the Di2 sensor was dropping probably about 80 times on 4 hours ride.

It's concerning because it's clearly not a sensor issue as different sensors are presenting the issue.

This started to happen about a month ago.

Today I installed the beta firmware 8.13 but there is nothing on the changelog about this issue.

I see many people reporting similar issues, but no solution at all.

Any recommendation ?

Thanks

  • I think the only thing to do is either put up with it and wait for Garmin to resolve or revert to an earlier FW version (no idea how to do that).

I believe i have read that garmin are aware of the issue.

  • I've been having a few problems for several months now (search my name in the forums for my diatribe about it), and 8.10 seemed to make the dropouts worse (was just power/cadence, but 8.10 then made DI2 and HRM drop as well). I've since removed and reconnected all my sensors, and the DI2 and HRM seem to be fine, but power/cadence still suffers periodic dropouts (no rhyme or reason or consistencies with the dropouts, either where they occur or for how long). I will say that 8.10 does seem to recover faster (prior to 8.10 it might be seconds or up to 15 minutes), but with 8.10 the duration of the dropout does seem to be shorter.

tl;dr - remove and reconnect sensors might help. Wait for Garmin to fix it.

  • Wow, as far back as 6.20 apparently.... Fix it Garmin, because those new Wahoo Elemnt Bolt V2's look pretty good.... Edge 530 6.20 sensor drop - Edge 530 - Cycling - Garmin Forums

  • Is there anyway I can download and downlograde to the fw before 8.10 ? I have the impression that it was stable before it.

Tomorrow I'll test the 8.13 beta (installed already)

  • I have versions 5.5, 7.00 and 7.10 saved if you want to test them (link below). I'm fairly sure you can downgrade, but you're settings are not brought across in the same manner as an upgrade.

I will remove the link to these files at the end of July 2021.

  • I see many people reporting similar issues,

What symptom have you been seeing specifically? Are you seeing drop outs mid-activity, or are your sensors not being found at all?

It may be helpful to try removing these sensors and then pairing them again as if it were the first time, but I understand from your post you have already installed the beta.

  • I use HRM-PRO together with the 530 and I have noticed dropouts mid-activity with the HRM.
It started a couple of weeks ago.
I have not noticed any dop-outs with any other sensor on the bike.

  • have not noticed any dop-outs with any other sensor on the bike

Have you tried removing and pairing this sensor again, or changing the battery? If one sensor is having an issue, it points to that sensor being the cause and not the Edge.

  • I did, many times honestly, and the difference is the sensor that keeps losing connection.

Inittially was the heart rate, once I removed and added again, was the speed sensor, then today was the power sensor.

This is the first 20min, all blank are connection issues, then i just disabled it and continued my ride as I was getting nervous with the beeps on the GPS reconnecting every few seconds.

Also, as I mentioned on the first post, battery was changed on all sensors recently, it is not a battery issue, and also, not 1 individual sensor issue. Sunday was the di2, today was the power sensor.

  • I used to have a cheap chinese IGSPORT unit, for over 8 months I had zero issues with any sensor, I'm actually considering open a claim to Garmin requesting a refund and move out completely from the brand and try any of these chinese units. I'm very concerned about the amount of complains about the same problem, too many topics with the same issue and no clear resolution.

In my case, battery (sensors + gps) are not a problem, sensor location the same, and external interference also not an issue as the problem happens anywhere. My biggest concern is the fact I see people complaining about this for over a year, and I was unable to find a straight response from Garmin, the fact that no firmware has fixed this yet, it gives me an indication that there is a hardware issue.
