Courses and segments

This discussion has been around for a while so I'm just confirming my understanding. I recently purchased the Edge 530 (actually exchanged a competitor's unit for the 530). I've spent the majority of my time with this unit trying to figure out why Strava live segments don’t display on saved courses as you ride over them. Admittedly they will display if I’m out just riding with no saved course or route loaded into my Garmin. However, if I’ve loaded a course or route and there’s a segment somewhere in that course it will never display on my Garmin as I ride over it. It doesn’t seem to matter where the course was created: Garmin Connect, Strava, Komoot, Ride with GPS. I’ve tried them all and I’ve verified that my segments are installed on the 530 and enabled. The competitor’s unit I returned didn’t seem to have a problem with this at all. Segments displayed in saved courses without any issues at all. This leads me to believe this limitation/restriction is intentional on Garmin’s part. Maybe there’s some economic motive I’m missing. Can someone within the Garmin stratosphere do a couple of things for me: firstly confirm my understanding that segments will not display in saved courses as you ride over them and then secondly, why not? It can’t be that technical

  • They will display if the course you are following is created in Strava and then synced to Garmin Connected and loaded on to the Edge.

Basically the course file has to know about the segment starting location and UUID for it so needs to be embedded into the course file.

  • Thanks for your response. I'm almost certain I've tried that but I'll try your suggestion before I go out again in the morning.

  • It didn't work! Weary This is so infuriating! Nothing I've tried seems to work! I created the route in Strava (stared it as a favorite), synched it to Garmin connect and then sent to my device from there, verified it in the 530, loaded it before my bike ride and then went out for a ride. The segment never displayed during my ride! I'm left with the inevitable conclusion that segments will not display when following a saved course on the 530. Almost considering going back to the competitor unit! What have I missed??! Anguished

  • Somehow I recall that you can expect up to 100 starred segments sync. Anything above will not. Maybe that is an issue?

  • Nope, only have 3 starred segments on the unit

  • Can you post the Course FIT file you were using. It will be in the Garmin\Course folder on the Edge.

  • I'm not seeing any segments referenced in the file.

The process should go something like this.

Create a course in Strava that passes over one or more of your starred (favorite) segments.

When saving the course mark it as a favorite.

If you haver the Strava/Garmin Course integration set-up then Strava will push the course to Garmin Connect.

If you view the course in GC you should see markers on the map for the segment start and end points.

When you sync your Edge it should download the course from GC as well as teh segment files if they are not already there..

So does the course run over a stared segment and how is the course getting to your Edge?

  • I'm assuming that the segment(s) you pass over are not downhill segments as Strava prevents those from being sent.

Strava considers anything that has an average grade of <= -0.2% as downhill.

  • First of all, I truly appreciate you assisting me with this. Thanks!!

In response to your described process, I've followed the steps you've mentioned including ensuring the Strava/Garmin integration is set up. The route I've created runs over 2 starred segments I've created in Strava. They show up on my Edge device under "Strava Live Segments" however, the segments start and end points don't show in the course when I load it. None of the segments are downhill.
