Show elevation gain not current elevation

First time Garmin user, and as a millennial this has got to be the most user unfriendly electronic device I've ever touched.

How do I see the total elapsed elevation gain completed while riding instead of current altitude? I saw another thread with someone saying it's all in the manual but the only manual I have is how to install the crooked MTB mount or cadence sensor and not a word on how to operate this thing. He was saying you had to create another "page"? I want this to show up on the same screen as current speed, mileage, etc.

So I would appreciate one of you kind souls helping me simmer down and figure out how to use this stupid thing before I buy a Yahoo Wahoo like I probably should have originally.

Hey the battery is good though...

  • To see the manual go to the product page on the Garmin website.  From there you can see a link to the manuals.  If you follow it you will find online and PDF versions available.

  • As I said I've already got the manual. Apparently I needed to create a new Activity Profile and then use a specific recording map like #10.

This is the only "relevant" part of the manual: Activity Profiles:

You can create activity profiles for each type of biking. For example, you can create a separate activity profile for training, for racing, and for mountain biking. The activity profile includes customized data pages, activity totals, alerts, training zones (such as heart rate and speed), training settings (such as Auto Pause® and Auto Lap®), and navigation settings.

It would be nice to know if you do that on the device, app or website. Takes a PhD to figure this thing out and Garmin is of no help. Only took me about four hours on my own. What a joke, Garmin.

  • All the set up of the unit has to be done on the unit. There is no other way.

  • Don't need a new profile. Just need to add "Total Ascent" as a data field to an existing or new page. The data field can be found under the Elevation category.

  • Activity Profile> [Name of Profile]> Data Screens> Screen 1> Layout and Data Fields.

    1. Select a layout with an extra datafield for the field you want to add.

    2. Scroll through the datafields to the one you want to edit, then change it to Total Ascent (under the Elevation category).

  • Total Ascent as has been described by a couple posters is the single field way to do it and works great.  There is also a Elevation Graph in the Graphical field group that shows a graph of your recent elevation, current elevation, total ascent, and total descent, all in a taller horizontal field.  I I have a page configured with 4 graph fields - Speed, Elevation, Heart Rate, Power.  It's a nice way to see a ton of parameters in one page.  Just another way to get to the elevation info you are seeking.

    • Hello there, the elevation graph you mentioned used to work great but I only see the graph and no other data. Not sure what the issue is, just stopped working. Any ideas?
