Why has my Edge 530 recorded 553 metres total
ascent when my companion’s Edge 520 Plus
has recorded 610 metres for the exact same spin on similar bikes with the same wheel size?

This is completely normal. Every device will measure altitude changes slightly differently resulting in different numbers at the end. The pressure sensors used to measure altitude changes are not calibrated…
There probably isn't an issue with either unit. Elevation measurements just aren't as accurate.

The pressure sensors used to measure altitude changes are not calibrated to make sure every unit calculates the same numbers from identical pressure changes. Every sensor has tolerances due to manufacturing variability that case this.
It is nothing to do with the wheel size.
Thanks Wongataa.
Got it that every device may not be callibrated exactly the same but the difference here is not slight. The difference is so great that neither figure can be trusted as accurate. Might there be an issue with one of the devices?
