Major Issues with Trailforks and Edge 530

It seems with the most recent update, using Trailforks for navigation through Connecf IQ doesn't work all on my Edge 530.

I load in the trail or route to the Edge and select YES to be navigated to the start. Once I start pedaling, the blue pause icon blinks on the screen alerting me to hit the start button. The start button will not work at all during these connect IQ modes. Therefore, the navigation doesn't work properly...it moves along the steps but my ride is never recorded. Also, once I reach the destination, my ride still isn't logged and the start button does not function. Using Trailforks and navigation was the single main reason I purchased this device. WTF is wrong with it???

  • The workaround I have been using is pretty annoying, but it does work. This can be done from a phone as long as you use the web browser for all of the below actions:

    1. Log into trailforks website using a web browser (NOT THE Trailforks Phone App)
    2. Download the trail/ridelog/course you are interested in as a GPX file
    3. Log into Garmin Connect website using a web browser (NOT the Garmin Phone App)
    4. Create a course and import the GPX file you just downloaded from trailforks
    5. Rename the course as you see fit and save it
    6. Click the STAR to make the course a favorite
    7. Open Garmin Connect on your phone and sync with your Edge (or use the desktop Garmin Connect to sync)

This will put the Trailforks course on your Edge without needing to use the Trailforks phone app or the Garmin IQ app, and you can do the whole thing from a phone at the trailhead as long as you have service without needing to plug your Edge into a PC.

Once you get the hang of doing this, it only takes a minute or two.

Would you mind replying with a quick description of what symptom you had? Knowing what exactly this workaround has fixed for you would be helpful to add to our escalation.

I just don't want to make assumptions on what experience you were having before trying a workaround.

  • I’m pretty sure the problem with mine which is I can not unlock the maps and it asks to log in each time is related to all of this.  I was able to reproduce this problem on 2 edge 530 devices using brand new accounts on Garmin and Trailforks.  Lead developer at Trailforks is aware also but said Garmin hasn’t been trying to fix it.  Maybe look into this and all will be fixed as it tries to use iQ, tries to sign in, then fails to unlock.

  • Thank you for the description, and this is different enough from the previous escalation that it would need to be handled separately. Would you be okay with me emailing you directly for some more information/a copy of your Garmin folder?

  • I have been having the same issue as described in the OP on my Edge 830. Version 7.10. Start button to begin an activity does not function. Cannot turn off the device without a hard reset (long press power button). Going back to the IQ menu and attempting to tap Trailforks, Strava Routes, or any other CIQ app does nothing and stays on the same menu. Additionally, when attempting to navigate to any CIQ widgets, they do not load and while the page indicator dot moves at the bottom of the page, the page appears merely as the last non-CIQ widget that was viewed (but is non-functioning. sort of like a screenshot). Any other info I can provide, please let me know. Our trails around here are like a tangled web and I love having the features of the app for navigating them.

For anyone else, this is a workable method for simply getting the course and navigating it though you lose all the niceties of the CIQ app like ForkSight and so forth. Simply go to the point where you Download a course and instead of clicking Ride, go all the way back to the main screen, go to Navigation -> Saved Courses and the course should be found in there.

I really hope this gets addressed soon. It's severely limiting the utility of my Edge right now and right before a big upcoming trip.

    Thanks for the help!

  • A full factory reset fixed all of the issues for me, so far. I've done 2 rides since the reset with no issues.

  • Interesting. I'm on a completely new device as my last one needed replacing. I did copy over my fit files as a backup...hmmmm

  • I believe I’ve narrowed down the issue to CIQ data fields in activity profiles used when launching a ride from a CIQ app like Trailforks. I did a full factory reset and everything worked fine. One by one I imported my old FIT files. Each time, power cycling, opening Trailforks, launching a ride and testing starting/stopping the ride. Every single one worked fine. My final imports were my activity profiles. Now at this point I have nothing CIQ installed except the default apps (Strava, Trailforks, etc). When I imported my activity profiles, all my CIQ data fields were reverted to the Timer field (as they were not currently installed). I tested this state and everything worked fine.

Now I proceeded to install my CIQ data fields (namely Wind Field, Forecastr, and SPH Graph). I tested with them simply installed but not on a profile and everything worked fine. I then added Wind Field to a profile data screen and when launching that profile through TrailForks, the bugged state reoccurred. I could no longer start/stop activities and widgets were all frozen/not loading, etc. I did a restart, removed it from the activity profile, relaunched through TrailForks and everything worked fine again. I repeated this process for several different CIQ data fields and the same issue occurred with all of them.

Without launching these activity profiles with CIQ data fields through a CIQ app (such as launching a course through the Navigation window), they all function correctly.

I hope this is helpful and I look forward to hearing any updates. Thank you!

  • Wow !

That is some fantastic forensic work! I'm glad you narrowed it down to this specific problem. Makes sense that the factory reset clears this all out. Sounds like Garmin has some programming to do!
