Edge Not Auto Connecting to iPhone

I normally have my Edge unit so it auto sleeps. Whenever I go to use it, I wake it up but it won't connect to my iPhone unless I open Garmin Connect on my phone, kill the app, then restart the app. Hardly user-friendly. I've tried reinstalling the software both on the device and the app and I've tried re-pairing many times, all to no avail. 

Any suggestions/ideas on what I am doing wrong?
