Edge 530 - GPS update during activity !

Edge 530, firmware: 7.10
GPS software update screen pops up during activity (sic!). After a few seconds, a successful update prompt pops up. Then every few tens of seconds this message repeats itself repeatedly. On the map screen, the position locked on some random unknown region.
This is the second time something like this has happened to me - earlier, a few months ago, the Edge stopped counting the distance traveled during activity.
Garmin - what the *** must be so important that during activity your software spontaneously, WITHOUT ANY REQUEST, WITHOUT ANY CONFIRMATION starts software updates! For ***'s sake

Get over it - it's not the first time this has happened to me and I'm not the only one who has written to you about it

P.S. I skip the fact that no GPS firmware update has actually taken place, because the GPS module has the same version as it had before the activity started. Because of this dumb behavior of Edge I had to end the activity and restart the device.

    Yeah, same annoying thing when the device is going to energy saving mode and is displaying a full screen (!) message which is not going away until you confirmed. Instead, the device should just do it; there is no alternative anyway.

    Sometimes I think Garmin programmers hate bikers.

    I had the exact same thing. Crazy. Device stalled and it took me 30 minutes to get everything back up and running.... all in the middle of a course.

    I was half way and lost all the data of the first half.

    Since this event, the map is no longer displaying any detail. Not when browsing, not when riding a course.

    I tried everything already, but cannot get it back. (Disabled trailforks map, reloaded maps through IQ)

    Happy for any advice.

    First, I am sorry about the experience you had, as this is obviously not the intended outcome. GPS updates do not prompt you to install them, but they should install right on start up and this shouldn't have happened mid-ride. 

    In regards to your map, what map were you using previously that you are now missing?

    Hi, thanks for the quick response. I'm using the Base Map and the 2 standard Garmin Cycle EU maps. I have just done some more testing: I deleted the existing map files from the Garmin folder and then uploaded them again from the Express tool. No change. I then disabled the Base Map and guess what: map detail is finally displayed again.

    Any thoughts?

    I'have tested a bit with one of the courses I have on the device, and everything seems to run smoothly.

    Firmware version 8.0, same thing. Updating the GPS firmware again while recording activity. As you can see you are effectively working to eliminate this bug Garmin.

    The same issue happened to me twice. 

    I believe it's not a big issue when cycling for fun nearby the house. But if the firmware update would start during a race, ftp test or when cycling using a map in the middle of nowhere I would be very disappointed. 

    Is there any plan to fix this behaviour as it is affecting the ride and GPS data is missing in the ride summary?

    Happened to me yesterday.

    Edge 530, firmware version 9.40.

    Mid ride, the screen shows Updating GPS firmware message, after that, gps froze, had to push power several seconds until shutdown, no sat reception, happened three times more after poweroff/poweron, had to do the route in 4 different actitivites, lost navigation and recorded just half the route, a fantastic mess.

    I also have GPS Firmware Update poping up mid-activity, ot then says update successful but i now Acquiring Satellites message never goes away and i have no position, speed data

    A year has passed since my previous post. Then we had version 8, now we have version 9.40 - and the error still occurs. Today, once again. No words.

    I have no solution.
