Software update interrupts ride.

Yesterday I'm about 11-12 miles out from home and notice that the Garmin says 0 MPH, and 0 cadence, timer has stopped, etc. So I stop and don't see any reason for it. I tell it to resume, but it doesn't. Finally I save the ride and as soon as I do that it says there is a software update and do I want to update or be reminded later. I say remind me later and then start a new ride only to have the same thing happen an hour or so later. I end up with 3 rides for the day instead of 1. Not sure if it tracked all of the ride or only up to the point it stopped displaying data.

What could be so dang important that I need to update the s/w in the middle of a ride? How hard is it to write the code to not give reminders in the middle of a ride? At the least, don't stop displaying data.

Please fix this for future updates.

  • First, I am very sorry this occurred. That sounds incredibly frustrating.

The software update should not have caused this, as that isn't the intended design. Do you happen to remember what software version it said was being installed? Or do you remember installing one via Garmin Express recently?

It's possible this was auto-synced through GCM. Do you have this Edge paired to the mobile app?

  • The device is paired to Garmin connect, which is running on ios. Not sure what auto-synced through GCM means. One additional thing to add is that I was in a semi-rural area and it's possible that I did not have cellular service at some point.

The last time I updated the software was in mid December I think. I don't know which version it was. After I returned home, I updated the s/w to 7.10.

  • You manually updated to SW 7.10 after you got home? What program did you use to install this?

  • I updated from the device. Menu/Settings/about/software update if I recall correctly.
