Edge 530 Wrong TE and Load

Hello,

I have an Edge 530 for a few months now.

I think there is a problem regarding training effect and load.

If I do a Z2 training, let's say at 160W during one hour, I have the same load as Zwift and a "good" training effect.

But if I do some interval with Z5 in it, the load and TE are not accurate ! 1 hour PMA training gave me "14" Load last time, and I was almost at FCM.

Is there something to change ?

Thanks

  • Do you have your HR zones, power zones, and FTP set correctly? The default zones Garmin uses are not necessarily a good fit either so using a different zone calculation is often a good idea.

  • Thanks for your answer.

I just checked, everything seems to be almost fine. Even if it wasn't, it doesnt explain why one hour in Z2 has more training load than one hour interval at high intensity ?

  • I do not believe that "load" is a recognised industry term with a single definition and formula. I think each site just uses their own version of a calculation. This means you can compare within a single site over time but not between sites. I believe that the answer is that simple.

Training Suffer Score (TSS) does has an official definition, i believe and i think this is a trademark of Training Peaks.

I did a workout on Tuesday which was a load of 68 on intervals.icu and 205 on Garmin Connect. Both scores are totally consistent to other scores for other activities within the same system.

    Cheers

  • The whole notion of reducing training effect or load to a single number is ridiculous to start with. You won't find a single pro endurance athlete or coach who actually uses it. The actual impact of each training bout on your physiology is far more complex. I would just ignore it.

  • Hi,

I don't really compare with TSS (which by the way are way more accurate than Garmin load), but just to have something coherent between workout. I don't really understand why a 1hour Z2 is, for Garmin, more exhausting than a FTP/PMA workout, it just make no sense !

I think that regarding the price, and the functionnality that Garmin sold, it could at least be a little coherent between workout for a same person.

  • Firstly, my apologies. I think i misread your post. I thought you were comparing load between zwift and GC, not GC to GC.

As far as i can tell mine are fairly consistent. Since GC doesn't give a fitness and freshness type chart i tend to focus more on sites that give that (intervals, strava, elevate). I do look at training status but then get annoyed when i do a big workout and get told i'm "unproductive" !!

Bat as said you do have to treat all such summary numbers with caution.

  • Not sure what PMA training or FCM is.

Can you post screenshots of your activities - especially graphs of power and heart rate.

  • Hello,

Two screenshot for example, you can see that there is one with much higher W and cardo, and it had a fewer TE/Load

17 Exercise Load, and the other is 56. It is the same with every interval training.

For information, I tried today with my 245M recording instead of my Edge 530, and load and training effect are way more accurate...
