530 Maps

Hello,

In my 530 I have 4 Maps activated:

INTL Standard Basemap

Garmin Cycle Map EU North East

Garmin DEM Map EU

Garmin Cycle Map EU South West

What are they for ?

Should we leave them all activated?

thank you for your reply

  • Leave them activated. If they didn't serve a purpose, they wouldn't even be installed.

The devices are designed to handle things efficiently even if you aren't using a map (like one that covers a place you never ride).

Anyway, here's what they are for:

    • The basemap is a world-wide map that doesn't have much detail. It provides something to see in places you don't have a detailed map for. It also is used at low zoom levels when the detailed map would be a mess to read and too slow to draw.
    • The DEM map has elevation. Elevation doesn't change very often and the main source Garmin uses for map data doesn't have elevation anyway. Keeping the elevation data separate means there's less to download when updating maps.
    • The "Cycle" maps are the maps used to show detail on the screen. These also have the information used for routing. These maps are created form Openstreetmap data. Your maps are for various parts of Europe (EU).

There are a couple of other maps (which are not included in the list you are seeing):

    • The Geocode (GC) maps had places and associated coordinates. This is used for looking up things to navigate to.
    • The Timezone (TZ) map has the locations of Timezones lines.
  • Thank you very much for this explanation and this quick feedback
