Edge 530 not booting anymore

My Edge 530 is not booting anymore

When starting the device, I first get the GARMIN letters appearing, but then quickly the screen turns black and nothing happens

When I try to reset the device (10sec press on the power button), the device turns off, but immediately reboots again, with same black screen as result

I have tried the forced reset with keeping the the lap button pressed for 30 sec, but no result again stuck on black screen
(I'm not sure if I do this procedure correctly. I cannot turn off the device before plugging into USB, because the device automatically reboots)

If I then leave the device for a while, suddenly I'm greeted with the initial setup screen, asking me to select language, sync with the connect app, .... and then the device seems to work properly again, with my profiles and stats imported. I then properly shut down the device. But when I later power it again, the same problem with the black screen pops up again

Any idea's what I could do?

  • Can you try holding the Lap/Rest button while connecting this 530 to the computer? This should force it into mass storage mode.

I would be interested to see if you have any .GCD update files that are in the Garmin Folder or in your NewFiles or RemoteSW folders.

  • I tried doing that in multiple ways, but without succes:

    - with the device on (stuck on the black screen): press lap, then plug into usb

    - trying to power down the device (power button) and when it reboots, quickly press lap and plug in

    just keeps stuck now :-(

  • I left the device overnight and was greeted in the morning with the setup screen again. So I ran through the setup, then connected it to my computer and did indeed find a few files in the RemoteSW folder. One of them was a .GCD file (006B310706.GCD), which I removed. The other two (.bin files, forgot to not the names) I left there. I managed to shut down the device normally and it booted again normally, hooray !

But then I did an indoor ride and at the end I was not able to stop my ride. I could resume the ride but all the stop button did was to pause the ride. So I tried shutting down the device with a 10sec press on the power button ... and I'm back to square one: device stops at black screen immediately after reboot. :-(

Should I have removed all files from the RemoteSW folder? Is there a way I can completely reinstall the latest FW from scratch?

  • I gave it one more try, and now instead of importing my old profile and settings during the import wizard, I decided to just set it up as a new device, and that seems to work. I can boot normally, shut down normally, and by pairing it to the connect app, I also managed to import my old history and stats.
This did not restore my profiles or my sensors. Would those be stored somewhere in connect?
And could it be that one of these profiles or sensor settings got corrupt and caused the initial problem?

  • It does sound like there was a file or folder on there that wasn't cooperating. Sometimes corrupt files can end up on your device (for a multitude of reasons) and it does sound like this is the case.

I would recommend setting this up as close to a new device as possible and not loading any old information back on to it. I know this is less convenient but is necessary to ensure this doesn't happen again.

Your activity profiles are not saved in Connect and would have to be manually backed up and loaded again using mass storage.

  • I'm afraid I was crying victory too soon. While I was configuring the 530 from scratch, an activity auto started due to GPS drift, but then I could not stop the activity. A force reboot then got me back to square one. There seems to be something fundamentally wrong with the device. I called Garmin support, and they said they will arrange for a replacement....

  • I am sorry that wasn't resolved without an exchange, but I'm glad this order was set up for you.
