Unable to stop activity on Edge 530

Over the weekend I used the ConnectIQ app Strava Routes while doing a ride.  When the ride ended, I pressed the "stop" button as I have done 100's of times before.  The head unit beeped to acknowledge the press, but the timer kept running.  After several attempts to stop and save the activity, I tried to cycle the power...but of course with a ConnectIQ app running, the unit would not power off.  Eventually I did a reset by holding down the power button for 10+ seconds - when I restarted the head unit I was able to save and sync the activity.  The only casualty seems to be the exercise load data was lost.

Anyone ever seen this issue before?  Is this a Strava Routes issue (I had forgotten to "star" the route so it was not pushed to Garmin)?
