Disabling Trainer

I typically use Zwift to ride indoors but there are times where I use my 530 to control my trainer... Typically if I connect Zwift and set Trainer before turning on my 530 everything works as expected... Meaning, Zwift controls my trainer even without 'disabling' the trainer on my 530. The times I want to use my 530 to control the trainer I simply dont connect the trainer within Zwift and I have no issues.

However, when/if I want to ride my rollers, my 530 automatically connects to my trainer and ignores my speed sensor. This is true even if I select an outdoor activity profile. Is there a way to disable the trainer without removing it completely or way to 'ignore' the trainer?

  • Turn the power supply to the trainer off.

  • Right, although effective, I’d think Garmin would be able to implement a built in solution.

  • You can also disable any specific sensor through the 530.

    Settings> Sensor> [Name of Sensor]> Disable.

  • For trainers you have to go Settings> Training> Trainer... However there is no option to 'Disable' or 'Disconnect' in the way you can do with other sensors.

    Hence my post/thread.

  • I ams also trying to use Zwift and want to use the 530 as a data collection device (telemetry from the trainer as well as an ant+ heart monitor).   I also have not found the option of just get the 530 to just listen to the telemetry rather than also trying to control the trainer.

    It is a connectivity mess.

  • Through the sensors menu, connect the trainer specifically as a power meter, rather than as an indoor trainer. Through the same menu, you can also disable the trainer connection. This should have it passively collecting power and cadence data, without trying to control the resistance of the trainr.

  • Hi:

Thanks.  I've been told that he free ride mode only connects data passively. Is this so?

Most of my Zwift issues have had to do with disabling __every__ bluetooth connectionexcept the active one between the Zwift app and the trainer (i.e. turn off smartwatch amd Edge 530 bt).  I'm hoping that in free ride mode, I can collect all the telemetry over ant+ without further interference.

  • Go to:

Menu > Trainining > Indoor Trainer > Trainer Sensor > Remove

    Then ALSO

Go to Sensor AND DISABLE or REMOVE all spesed sensors with your Trainer ANT ID

The annoying thing is that if you enable the traininer you get the speed, cadence and power from the traininer, when it SHOULD just be based on the items that show up under the sensor list.

Personally, I think what is needed on Garmin devices is to be able to set the Sensor Priority for speed, cadence and power. Rather than disabling devices, if you could set which one the Garmin used, when two or more were present, it would make some situations easier to deal with.
