Basecamp starts up with a really minimal map. insufficient for doing any real routing. If the 530 is plugged into the computer does Basecamp show a detailed map where you can route on trails and roads?

Have you tried it? It doesn't take long to try it and see what happens, a lot more quickly than waiting for this answer.
If you plug a Garmin GPS device into a computer that has Basecamp running then in Basecamp you will have the option to look at the maps on the GPS device.
There are other ways of doing it. It seemed the virtual drive approach was simpler (especially, with mucking with multiple maps).
It's not even that hard to copy and use the maps that are on the devices.
Create the \Garmin folder and drop the *.img map into it. Make sure the drive is indicated as removable.

Create a short cut (on your desktop) to mount the disk (this will make it more convenient getting things set-up when you reboot).
My shortcut has:
C:\Windows\System32\imdisk.exe -a -o rem -t file -m #: -f C:\Users\myname\Documents\GPS\EDGESD_VIRTUAL
It's also nice to be able to not have to plug the device in to use maps.
The free OSM maps from other sources aren't locked.
I got copies of the OSM maps on the device to work (they didn't at first). I don't have a good idea how I got them to work. It's something worth trying but it's not necessary (the free OSM maps are good enough).
