Edge 530 not recording accurate distances.

My Edge 530 consistently records lower mileage totals than other riders on the same rides. Today I recorded 10.16 miles when others on the same loop recorded 10.7  and 11.2 respectively. We rode the exact same mountain bike loop. This seems to happen on almost every ride, particularly MTB. What can I do to get more accurate distances?

  • Are you using an external speed sensor or are you using GPS for speed/distance? Twisty courses can under report distance when using GPS. Adding an external speed sensor that is configured with correct wheel size can improve this.

Just using the GPS for speed / distance. Thanks

  • Using a speed sensor should provide more accurate distance data.  GPS signal strength affects accuracy which can explain why MTB can experience less accuracy since you're often in a forest or mountains/hills which can affect signal clarity.

But how do you know your riding buddies' distances are more accurate?  They don't agree with each other either and unless they are using speed sensors, their data is subject to the same potential issue.  But in general, GPS data may often report lower distance than speed sensor recordings because GPS signal may miss the little ups and downs that represent a longer distance travelled than the straight line distance between readings that the GPS would capture.
