Map rotates away from track up when stopped

I have the orientation set to track up. The trouble is when I stop moving, the map rotates to some other orientation (north up?). This is problematic for lots of reasons - but the biggest problem is that the current location is not centered on the screen which is fine when its track up - most of the screen is where you're going. However when it rotates, often where you're going rotates off the screen and you can no longer see it. There's also the issue of the mental gymnastics to match the rotated map up to what you're looking at in front of you to figure out which way to go. If the unit is navigating, and you're not moving, then where you came from should remain at the bottom.

  • Yes, but the map is upside down.

  • The map has to rotate so that north arrow is pointing north. To keep the blue triangle pointing to the top of the unit, it has to rotate the map. (It's not "upside down" at all.)

    It looks like you rotated the unit in your hand but kept your body in the same orientation. That is, you pointed the top of the unit at your belly button in the second image.

    If so, then north is to your left. The map shows that north is to your left in both images.

    If you are trying this out, you have to make sure the unit is square to your body and rotate your body (keeping the unit square). (The unit should also be kept fairly flat.)

  • You are right. But that is not normal. I'm gonna upload some videos with the issue.

  • I'am using the standard profiles from garmin after the factory reset,SportsProfile.zip

  • I made a loop in a parking lot to show the issue, all works great until i stop moving.

    .

  • The blue arrow (the arrow in the center of the map) is pointing to the top (front) edge of the unit and the map rotates as you ride.

    It's working as it should (for track up).

  • I think he's confirming that it is working as it should, right up until the very end where he stops moving and then the map shifts almost 180 degrees like he has turned around.  When he has not turned around, just stopped moving

  • It's working as it should (for track up) whem i'am moving, when i stop the map rotate thats the issue.

  • So, the issue is the measured orientation (your presumed heading) of the unit when stopped.

    It looks like the compass is measuring north backwards.

    If the top edge is pointed north (when stopped), what does the compass on the unit say it's pointed to? Ideally, the compass would point in the correct location as the device is rotated (looking at the north orientation isn't enough). Do you have another compass to compare it to?

    It could be a miscalibrated compass, some interference (nearby metal) confusing the compass, the compass isn't working, or the unit isn't treating the compass data properly.

    ==================================

    Comparing my 1030+ with an iPhone, the 1030+ is off by -5 to -10 degrees in all four directions. An inexpensive Sliva compass shows a similar -5 to -10 degrees difference from the iPhone. This shows 3 different devices agreeing.

    ==================================

    When moving, the devices use the change in GPS location to calculate the heading.

    For units without compasses, the devices would either need to use the GPS to determine orientation (or just freeze on the last known orientation).

    From what I've seen in units without compasses, the orientation tends to keep changing, which suggests it still using GPS even when stopped. The orientation keeps changing due to the GPS location hopping around..
