Edge 530 cadence inaccurate

Hi,

I've got 2 cycling computers from Garmin, old 25 and new 530.

During my indoor ride I noticed that cadence displayed on 25 is almost stable +/- 1 when i cycle consistently with e.g. 90 or 100 RPM, but on 530 cadence in jumps ~85-93 often a few times a second.

Is there any setting I could use?

  • How do you know which one is inaccurate? Could the difference be explained by less smoothing (from a higher measurement rate) on the newer device?

  • If you were using both devices for the same ride could you post the FIT activity files from both units here and I will take a look.

  • I suppose one of your head unit (the 25) picked up the cadence signal from a cadence sensor on crank (or from powermeter) the 530 picked up the trainer's (what kind of trainer du You have?) estimated cadence which is so jumpy (depends on trainer but in 99% it is jumpy). Share the 2 FIT files as above mentioned and from the 530 FIT we can read out the name/type/signal strength of the used cadence sensor.

  • Hi, both are picking up cadence from crank. I didn't pair cadence sensor from turbo trainer with 25, and disabled the same connection in 530.  It's Satori Smart. Also when I run a workout in Tacx app, the cadence is more stable, 25 alike - but I set Tacx app to use crank one deliberately.

Could it be related to "Data Recording" settings ? Smart vs 1 second?

I will share FIT files today.

  • the Data Recording rate doesnt matter if You have power sensor connected, with that it is 1sec always (even if You set it at smart) . the Edge 25 cant handle power sensor so there could be smart recording rate instead of 1sec but it is only for the number (dense) of records in FIT file, the displaying rate meanwhile You are pedaling is 1sec on both units so both should display the same if the source is the same too.

Okie, we are wating for the files!

  • Hmm, unable to attach, getting error :/

  • compress it into ZIP, the forum cant accept FIT file somewhy.

  • i checked both files, the Edge 25 on smart (the 530 is on 1s due to power) , i suppose it is the gyroscopic Garmin cadence sensor right? On 530 it is clearly seeing (the characteristic of the cadence ) but on Edge 25 it is looking different (with post analysis), ok, it could be the smart recording too but in the 2 files i 'm seeing totally 2 different device IDs, in the Edge 25 the cadence ID is 24775011 , in 530 it is 2403 (i suppose the 530 is storing the ANT ID, the Edge 25 is storing the serial? the HR belt has different IDs in both devices... )

Pls set the 1s recording in the Edge 25 and record your next indoor workout with that, and compare that 2 cadence charts, the smart is recording with variable 4-7sec intervals (sometimes even more, sometimes a little less) and we cant compare it "bit by bit"

  • It's not a Garmin sensor, but yeah, the one that goes on the crank. 2403 on 530 is ANT ID indeed. HR is the same for both.

I don't think it's possible to set 1s recording on Edge 25. I cannot even browse through sensors, can only add them or remove all.
