Navigation advice

So I went out for a big ride yesterday what was a 100 mile loop. Now at some point I was off route (40 miles in) I've a few questions so I don't go round in circles again.

  1. The Garmin 530 was trying to get me be back on route back to my destination, which was my staring point. How do I stop this from happening, I don't want to go back to the start after only 30miles
  2. I set up my Garmin to NOT recalculate my route but during rides but it was constantly popping up, what can I do stop the pop up.
  3. When I get the pop to accept / cancel recalculation what is the Garmin trying to recalculate. a. My original route b. Back to my starting point, in this case my destination as it was a loop. Do I have control over what's being calculated?
  4.  Off Course, I see the off course message at the bottom of the screen but I'll see the route on the map and the top of my screen outlines the road/route I'm taking as though it's all sorted, what does this actually mean or is the 530 catching up.

The Garmin530 pdf although extensive it's short on detail for circumstances like this.

  • 1. Turn off route recalculation.

    2. If you have turned recalculation off it won't do that but if you have set it to ask it will.

    3. A route to your destination point.  It is highly unlikely (pretty much guaranteed to be different unless there is only one way back to the destination point) to be the same route as you had originally planned.  You have no control of the calculation besides the general routing options.

    4. All it means is that the device has detected you are not on the course you are navigating course and it is telling you this.  You can clear the message by pressing the appropriate button, just as you would clear any pop up notification.

If you go off course and let the unit recalculate it will just calculate a new route to the end point of the course your were navigating.  It will not route you back onto the original course and navigate you along the course to the end.

It is best practice to turn off recalculation and if you go off your course make your way back onto it yourself and then the unit will notice and start navigating along your course again.

It is up to you if you want to turn off course warnings on or off.  Those warnings don't result in any route recalculations.  It is just a warning you can dismiss.

  • Where did you get the course? Can you provide a link to it? You could send it in a private message.

There are actually two separate navigation modes.

1- basic track following. This is the dark purple line of your loaded course. The "off course" warning occurs if you stray too far from this line. This mode has nothing to do with maps.

2- "turn guidance" is the big white arrows. This is actually a second route that the unit calculates by "walking" the track and picking the roads the track appears to be following.

The units can have issues with parts of the course that are out and back on the same road.

Usually, if you kept going the right way, the unit will pick up the route correctly.

Part of the problem is that the unit doesn't know your heading unless you are moving.

People often don't need to have the unit to recalculate. Especially, since usually the easiest and fastest thing to do is a u-turn.

  • Strange that with No Recalculation it still wanted to re calculate a new route to your destination - Can you confirm that the route did not go back over itself - that is a big No-No for navigation.

all the above advice works so taht the 530 works as expected: 1) Turn off auto recalculation 2) turn off Off Course warning.

What i would like Garmin to have a function button to recalculate the course while on the go - so everytime i activate it it will generate another route suggestion - so u keep generating a route until you find one you like....currently it takes too many key strokes to do that. Of course the other option then is to use Komoot on the mobile to generate the a route and then transfer it to the 530....

  • The off course warning is often useful to have. It has nothing to do with recalculation.

The 1030+ gives you multiple route options when it recalculates. It also lets you pause navigation.

  • I created the course using Komoot, so I think there was anything unusual about the course itself. I just took a few wrong turns and wanted to continue on my route but found my self heading back to the start.

  • Thanks for you reply, I'm a little clearer now.

  • Can you confirm that the route did not go back over itself - that is a big No-No for navigation.

I would not call this a "big no no". It's fairly common and generally something that one can deal with. It's just important to understand that it can be an issue.

It's hard for other people to have a good idea of what you were experiencing. Seeing the course can be helpful.

The route is the darker line. The recalculated routes are lighter. If you want to get back to the route, you want to be clear what your location is relative to the darker line (that's one purpose of the map). That the 530 doesn't have a touch screen might make that somewhat harder to do.

Were you heading back to the start on the original track/course or following the recalculated route?

    Also, turn off recalculation.
