Edge 530 stops recording during a ride

I've had my Edge 530 for 5 rides.  On 3 of the rides the speed and distance and/or cadence cut out anywhere from 10 - 20 miles into the ride (showd "0 mph and distance did not increase).  I could not get the recording to start up by powering off.  One one ride the speed and distance started to record again "on it's own" after about 15 minutes of riding.  When I uploaded the ride at home, the map showed the entire 55 mile route, but only recorded a total of 34 miles.  This is frustrating.  Thoughts?

  • Same problem here. This problem started a couple of days ago for me and has happened now three times during 2 rides. The only work-around I found was stop the recording, power off (not sleep) and on and starting a new recording. But of course that is not a resolution.

I haven't experienced this previously in the past approx 1.5 year and have not updated to new firmware, so I'm wondering what happened recently that caused this.

  • gjdv:  thanks for the comments.  I went round and round with Garmin tech support for several weeks.  They were very responsive, but could not solve the problem.  I ended up exchanging for a "new" (refurbished) Edge 530.  I've had it out for only one ride and everything worked OK.  Going out tonight for my second trip.  I think updateting to the newest firmware is a good idea -- that's the first thing the tech person checked on my pervious Edge.

  • Thanks for your response. I understand why a tech person has that as his nr1 response. Given the quality of Garmin's tests before relasing firmware updates, and bad first hand experience in the past, I'm quite hesitant to do that, but if this problem persists, I will have to give it a go.

  • I've had mine since June and it's done this twice.  Before and after the newest firmware upgrade to 6.20.  Once it stopped and never restarted.  The second time it stopped for a few miles a few times, restarting on its own.  The navigation display appeared correct, it just stopped logging to the file which you don't find out until the end of the ride when the mileage seems low, or upload and see the straight lines.  Looking at the GPX file after download, it was clear it had stopped and restarted logging info on the route.  I've entered a trouble ticket with support, but in the meantime, I purchased the unit from REI, and they are allowing me to replace with new. • BobG:  Your situation appears very similar to mine with the Edge 530 ceasing to record in the middle of a ride.  Occasionally it will re-start on it's own, sometimes not.  Since my last post, I have had more exchanges with Garmin Tech Support.  They sent me a hub speed sensor (no charge) and said that might help  (up to this point I was recording speed and distance off the GPS only).  After pairing the speed sensor with the 530, I've only had one ride and the 530 recorded everything fine for the whole ride.  I'll hold further judgement on if this solved the issue after a few more rides.

Another customer now finding this same experience. Thanks for the advice Gents, I’ll try the Garmin chat and see what they say. Maybe the speed sensor is the way forward but I’m loathed to pay for one when the actual product does not work as as it should.

  • As a follow up, Garmin support suggested I delete a number of files on the device effectively starting from scratch.  Their thinking was a that a corrupt file was causing the issue.  However, I ride under tree cover a lot, and I recalled GPS can drop out and then the device thinks you've stopped if auto-pause option is enabled.  I've since disabled auto-pause and have not seen the issue recur.

  • I too have had this issue since I bought it almost a year ago. Its been occurring off and on and I have contacted support 3-4 times. Support has been responsive, but they have no idea of how to repair it. Each time its - let try this and see if it works ... it doesn't. Very disappointing for a $300 product.

  • turning off auto-pause solved my problem totally, haven't seen issues since my last post.  i don't care that the gpx file shows me staying still for a while.

  • 9761702 and all:  Haven't been on the bike since November (Wisconsin winter) but at the end of the season my Edge 530 seemed to behave better when I added a new hub speed sensor (provided by Garmin).   I'll also turn off the auto-pause for good measure and hope for the best this Spring.  Otherwise your experience dealing with the Garmin techs sounds similar to mine -- lot's of "try this and see if it works" advice.  Did not instill confidence.
