Connect IQ during an activity i.e Trail Forks

Hello

I recently bought Edge 530 mainly because it had some kind of TrailForks integration. I really liked the trailforks Android app.

However the major issue on Garmin device is the inability to start any app during an activity. No one mentions this flaw in reviews.

Also syncing courses does not work during activity.

I was wondering if it's intentionally blocked by Garmin to you have to buy some more expensive mode? Does 1030 have the same problem?

  • To my knowledge it is the same for all models, no apps running at the same time with activity.

One reason could be memory usage, apps are given about 1MB memory to run, perhaps there isn't enough memory on device to have activity and app running at the same time. However on Edge devices, widgets also get 1MB memory and can run during activity, so perhaps not memory issue after all.

Or, if you consider especially watches, in those application is activity, and activities are applications. Maybe the OS is able to run only one at the time. I know in Edge activities and apps are started quite different ways, but underneath they may have similar mechanism.

It's hard to say why, but since there really isn't any obvious monetary reason to not allow running apps during activity, I assume it is some technical reason.

For solution, one way is to convince TrailForks people to port their app also as a widget for Edge devices. Since available memory is the same, difference between apps and widgets is not really that big. Mainly only if they use some CIQ APIs which cannot run in widgets, there would be trouble.

I really wish Garmin would implement "Resume later" in Edge devices, like they have in watches. Then you could just stop the activity, run any app and sync your courses etc., and then continue activity where you left off.

  • I've read a little about Widgets and Apps and one difference is that Widgets can't record data. Maybe it's the reason why you can't run an App during activity because recording is already active?
