prevent device applying v6 update

I've a long ride planned this weekend and don't want to risk running the new v6 firmware on my 530.      I keep getting prompted to install it on the device but choose "remind me later"

I'm pretty sure if I connect it to Garmin Express utility (which I need to do),   it will auto install.     It auto updated last update.

How can I prevent device installing update?    I assume its already downloaded something to the device telling it there is an update ready.

suggestions?

thanks

  • Disable Garmin Express, (turn it off), then mount the device to your computer, check for and rename the file `GUPDATE.GCD` if it exists in the `GARMIN` folder to `GUPDATE.DISABLE`.

I am not sure, but I suspect it will still attempt to re-download the update the next time you sync with Garmin Express, so you might want to double-check and delete/rename any subsequent copies of GUPDATE.GCD that get copied to your device if you sync to GE again before you want to upgrade.

When you're ready, rename `GUPDATE.DISABLE` back to `GUPDATE.GCD`

  • Much simpler: Create an empty file called GUPDATE.GCD and put it in the Garmin directory.

Only connecting your Edge to your computer and running Garmin Express will overwrite this file. Using Garmin Connect will not do this.

  • I was afraid that this would cause an error message on the device during startup since it would technically be a corrupt installation file and I didn't want to spend the time to test it, plus I'd already upgraded to v6 so any tests would be suspect being against the wrong version.

Also the OP already has the GUPDATE.GCD file on the device otherwise it wouldn't be prompting the upgrade, so they need to move it out of the way anyway.

  • Well, then, keep worrying.
