Physio TrueUp - it doesn't really work?

I have an Edge 530 and a ForeRunner 945.

According to Garmin, these metrics should be synched via Physio TrueUp.

Physio TrueUp is a feature that lets you switch between compatible devices while keeping the following data in sync:

  • VO2 max

  • Recovery Time*

  • Training Status1

    • Training Load
    • Training Load Focus
    • Heat/Altitude Acclimation
  • Race Predictor

  • Last Sport Widget2

  • Last Run/Ride/Swim Widgets2

  • Weekly and Monthly totals2

I'm not seeing this.

  • VO2 max - seems to work

  • Recovery Time* - maybe?

  • Training Status1

    • Training Load  - does not transfer, shows separately in GC, does not show cumulative in each device
    • Training Load Focus - this does not seem to transfer as they are different on each device
    • Heat/Altitude Acclimation - this does not seem to transfer as they are different on each device
  • Activities - does synch between devices

I also know this has been discussed before, but it seems insane that Training Status is not synched between devices. Garmin Connect says, "Use Training Status as a guide for understanding your overall training.", but this is not true since it's device-specific.  If anything it makes my overall training picture more confusing.

Please integrate this better, between compatible devices this should be seamlessly "trued up". I have two Garmin devices so that my training can be integrated and an overall picture, but right now it is not.

  • Agree. Totally confused since I got the 530 in addition to my forerunner 935.

  • Same here. Fortunately I'm not doing running now, only cycling, so I just ignore what my FR935 says, but it's still an ungodly mess.

It would be a tiny bit better if Garmin Connect would remember that I want to look at the Edge's Training Status, but it defaults back to the nonsense that the watch is trying to say every time I open the app on my phone.

  • Look at the Training Status widget on the device itself - it does show Load and Load Focus on an intergrated basis. Garmin Connect only shows it for each device. Go figure!

  • The more I use my Edge 530, the odder I feel Garmin's implementation of Physio TrueUp is...  Here are some oddities I found...

I did the Zwift Crit City race with my FR945 two weeks ago.  The FR945 gave the effort an accurate "Threshold" value, with a 3.8 aerobic, 0.5 anaerobic and 161 Load score. TSS was 68.1 and IF was 0.886.  Almost exactly the same effort recorded with my Edge 530 (granted I had 10min more easy spinning before the race) gave me a "Base" value (what?), 2.8 aerobic, 0.7 anaerobic and a 61 Load score.  TSS was 75.3 and IF was 0.86.  That's wildly different for nearly the same ride.
The only thing I can possibly think of is that the Edge did sync my FTP and VO2 Max via Physio TrueUp and maybe it's making calculations based only on that, while my FR945 is making it based on all history.  But still, my FTP is 238 (2.9 w/kg), I averaged 246W (3.1 w/kg) for the 24 min race. When I got dropped from the lead group I was doing 280W to hang on.  After getting dropped and left for dead I had to solo 4 laps, that's not a "Base" effort.
Physio TrueUp doesn't seem to combine the load factors, at least for me.  It uploads them to Garmin Connect, but it has dropdowns for each device vs a combined number, I thought that was strange and not very useful.  The activities sync between my devices and show up on the Last Activities screens, but when I look at the activities in the weekly training status, it doesn't show the activities from my Edge.  My FR945 is still showing Productive, but based on a ride Monday, not on any of the new rides recorded with the Edge this week.  My Edge is showing no Status, even though it synced all the activities from the FR945.  We'll see if my FR945 changes to something like Unproductive or Recovery over time.
I opened a chat with Garmin support and tried to explain all of this, but got nowhere.  They said the FR945 is a "multisport watch" and won't sync everything or make the same calculations.  I thought that was a bizarre response.  What good is a Training Status and Load if it's not a complete overall picture from any Garmin FirstBeat licensed device?
Overall a bit disappointed with Garmin.  They could do this better.  July 1st starts rowing (with appropriate safety protocols), I figured my FR945 and Edge 530 would seamlessly work together to provide me my Training Status and Load between activities as I row and still continue to ride.  It doesn't seem that's the case, they are almost entirely separate.
  • I also wondering about something related to using the 530 for MTB while having my 945 on my wrist:

Should the watch count climbed floors while I ride?

Don't it know that on that specific time period the Edge recorded a ride and hence I wasn't walking up the stairs???
