Strava segments not automatically popping up during ride

Just got the Garmin Edge 530. I have Strava premium account. I have linked Garmin Connect and Strava. I have starred segments on my Edge and enabled all segments. I activated Strava segments not Garmin segments. I understand the whole < than negative .1% grade not transferring over, that's fine. But when I ride no segments pop up when I am coming close to them. On my routes, when I view them before a ride, it shows up as a different color, so I know my unit recognizes them. But when approaching segments, nothing. I would have to manually start the segment. What am I doing wrong? Thanks in advance.

  • If you are following a course then that course needs to be created in Strava so that the segments get referenced in it. The new Strava course integration should then push your starred courses to Garmin Connect and then down to your Edge.

  • Thanks for the response. I am coming off the Lezyne Mega C gps. It was not as featured pack as the 530 but everything worked great. Regardless if I downloaded a route from Strava or Lezyne ecosystem or Ride with GPS, starred segments would automatically appear. Even if I'm not using a route, just the map. Are you telling with the 530, with all the features and the added cost, the only way to auto enable a Strava segment is if I created the route in Strava?

  • No, what I'm saying is that if you are following a course and want segments to be detected then the course must be create in Strava and synced to the Edge.

If you are not using the navigation features on the Edge then it should detect enabled segments as you get to the start.

  • Almost there. I tried what you said. Created a route through Strava. was downloaded to 530. Went on ride. Strava segment did not pop up. Cancelled navigation, went back to same segment and it did alert me when approaching. This shouldn't be that hard!! Thanks for your help

  • Navigation and live segments (either from Strava or Garmin) is just something that is fundamentally broken on Garmin devices. You can sometimes get it to work but it is fragile at best. If you are used to a Wahoo, which uses a much simpler logic (select wether you want live segment alerts during navigation and/or workouts and then it'll simply trigger the segment once you reach the start point and move (roughly) in the right direction) then it is quite hard to understand why Garmin makes such an over complex mess out of it.

So, if today is the day you trained for to snatch that KOM I strongly suggest you turn off navigation when you are getting close to a segment. That seems to be the best way to ensure that the segment actually triggers (presumably because it then uses the same logic as the Wahoos).

  • Thanks man. I have Garmin gear, from golf gps watches to bike sensors, so switching to bike gps would seem like a no brainer. I cannot believe how convoluted the Garmin process is! From setting it up to using it. If it weren't for the maps, I probably would stick with the Lezyne. I looked into the Roam but it was just too expensive.

I was able to figure out the segments thanks to 'aweatherall'. Created a route through Strava and downloaded it to Garmin. My mistake was there were 2 identical routes, one Garmin one Strava. How'd that happen? Anyways, I initially chose the Garmin route and went on ride. No segments popped up. Next ride, chose the Strava route and starred segments popped up!

That brings up another issue. I notice my MacBook Pro works overtime when creating routes in Strava. I can hear the fan constantly going! So much so a banner pops up saying "This website is using a lot of energy. Please close it". Lol

Lets see how long this lovefest lasts with the Edge 530. So far so good.

    Thanks guys!
