how do I record a ride?

Hi just got a garmin edge 530 and cannot work out how to record a new route to use at a later stage. I clicked the shortcut menu button and went to start and then pressed the stop button at the end of the ride and lost it. How to record it?

    Not quite sure I'm understanding your question correctly.  If you are just having trouble with it saving your ride, that is pretty automatic.  Hit the Start/Stop button at the start of your ride.  Hit it again at the end of your ride.  The unit will come up with a menu at that point where the first choice is "Save Ride" or something like that.  Hit the enter (Upper right) button.  It will be saved in the device.  If you have configured your Garmin account, then it will automatically upload to your account so you can see it on the web at Garmin Connect or on your phone using the Garmin Connect Mobile app.

    Using that route at a later stage can be done by creating a "Course" in either the phone App or online, then downloading that new route into the computer, or locating the ride you want in the History on your device and telling it to create a Course from that ride.  Very straightforward even in the user not-so-friendly Garmin user interface.

    I have purchased my first 530 and cannot start recording the ride.  not sure what i am doing wrong.  ??

    Simply press the lower right button to start recording, press it again at the end to stop recording.  The unit will then bring up a menu that asks if you want to save the ride.  Select Save This Ride and it will automatically upload to your Garmin account if your phone is running the Garmin Connect Mobile app and you have linked it to a Garmin account.  If not, the ride will still be stored inside the Edge until you download the .fit file and do something with it manually.

    Just to be more specific. It's the right hand of the two buttons at the bottom of the unit. Not the buttons on the RH side of the unit.

    That is correct.  Did your Edge 530 come with a Users Manual?  While not the most perfect of documents, it does explain the functionality.  If you don't have it, you can download it at: https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/edge530/EN-US/Edge_530_OM_EN-US.pdf

    Thank you for helping out with this answer . 

    You can select your desired Activity Profile from the main menu before pressing the Start/Stop button (right button on bottom of device). 

    I will make sure we get this feedback passed along to see how we can improve our QuickStart guide that comes with the device.
