ClimbPro: What's next?

ClimbPro pops up on your screen and tricks you into learning it, but then maybe you find it's not quite what you wanted/expected. Now that we've all upgraded and talked about it, will our wish list start to be implemented?

In its current form ClimbPro is neat on a long climb that I've never ridden before, but there aren't many of these around. I'm going to tuck it away in an activity profile for places with new climbs. (I may not ride one until the 2020 pandemic is over...)

Will the "climbs" always be determined by algorithm? I want to choose my own climbs, and I want the top to be, well, at the top. I rode one the other day that started on a descent, dinky rollers followed, and the finish was a random point on flat road. A major local climb was split into two, which was just about a dealbreaker. I assume it'll work better in mountains where climbs are obvious to the algorithm, but that's not very impressive.

I don't care for features popping up and taking over the whole screen. Strava starred segments do this, but you get to choose them and make your own. Not so ClimbPro? When the two overlap, it's a hassle to untangle mid-segment. Aside from getting the top at the top, I find segments more useful when playing with Strava or even for training.

The info in the ClimbPro screen is definitely interesting. Could it move to the Elevation screen rather than popping up on its own? Could the climb profile become a data field? Could climbs match up with my starred Strava segments if they are uphill? Will I get to go on a cycling vacation in the next 2 years?

Yeah totally agree, I ride the Dales, Peaks and Lakes a lot and most of the climbs are in Simon Warrens 100 Climbs books so they have very clearly defined segment start and end points, but ClimbPro makes a total pigs ear of a lot of them, often starting well before the proper segment begins or finishing before the aproper end point because 'it' decides what is a 'climb' and what isnt. You also get loads of junk information you dont want aswell. The only option you have is to decide whether you want to see all, medium, or large climbs only which doesnt seem to make any difference whatsoever anyway.

I love the concept a lot, but its a rough draft at present, I plan my routes meticulously to get as many key climbs in as possible so being able to see only starred segments would be awesome...I see absolutely no reason why it could just take your starred segments from your planned route and simply create a ClimbPro 'list' from them... this is potentially such a great feature but Garmin are notoriously crap when it comes to listening to users. . .perhaps this is something Wahoo will implement, the prospect of ClimbPro being improved is really the only thing stopping me migrating to Wahoo at present.

  • I like the feature.    I ride a lot of new routes and find it useful for judging effort on climb,  what's coming up next and how much further to go on the climb.
