Not correctly tracking distance or speed.

I went on a mile marked rails trail yesterday and rode 84 miles.  My Garmin only states I did 78.  Also, the recorded speed was far lower than what I was actually doing, with the speed at full effort regularly dropping down to 5-7mph and then all of the sudden going up to 40mph. The speed was not consistent and the average was lower.  This issue remained after disabling the sensors (using the Garmin cadence 2 sensor) which was the only sensor I was using.  I am on the latest public firmware and gps software.  Power saving is off and recording interval is automatic.

Any help appreciated!
