start point navigation gpx

I have several MTB and road cycling GPX routes which pass near to where I live.

The start point is somewhere else.

But it seems the edge always will point me to the starting point of the GPX.

Is there anyway to have the edge navigate to the nearest point on the route and start from there ?

  • No.  However, don't select the option to navigate to the start of the route, navigate onto the route yourself, and the device will recognise you are on the route and give you the navigation prompts from wherever you started riding along the route until you reach the end of the route.

  • Thank you for your answer.

So I have to set the start point of the route myself then?
Somewhere on or near the GPX route.

And when I am on the route I need to manually change to the route and it will see I am on the route and then it will work?

That means if I am in an area where I am unfamiliar, which is common when using navigation, then I have no idea which starting point is nearest. Also selecting points to navigate to is not that easy on an edge 530.

  • You don't need to select the start point.  Just select the option to navigate the route as normal and decline the option to navigate to the start point.  When you get to the route and start following it the Garmin will recognise this and give you the navigation correct prompts.  You would have to use the map screen or other method to navigate yourself to the route.

If you did choose the navigate to the start of the route option the Garmin will direct you to the start of the route as defined in the GPX file.

  • Thanks again for the answer.

My 6 year old mio 315 would prompt me in the beginning of each route if I wanted to go to the start or the nearest point.
I alwas thought of this as such a basic function I didnt check if the edge could do it.

Navigating myself on the map makes no sense to me. Why buy an exspensive cycling computer with gps if it can not even give me directions?
This is ridiculous, If I am on holiday in France and the start point is 25km away and the track is 10km away, then I am supposed to figure out for myself what the best way is to get to the route and navigate 10km untill I get there. And in case of a lap I need to keep an eye when I finish a lap and navigate back myself again.

I will look a bit further for an other solution but it seems the edge is going back in the box and I am going back to Mio.

  • The only way to have the Garmin navigate you to the route would be to pick a point on the map and have it navigate you to the point.  The you would have to select to navigate the route.  That is just they way they work I'm afraid.
